First off I want to say I really enjoyed this contest. I've been in a sewing rut recently and this finally got me going again.
I got the chance to go to goodwill after work about two weeks ago where I found this awesomely horrific 80s sweater dress (sans shoulder pads which surprised me). Initially I put it back thinking it was beyond rescue, but it kept calling to me. After two hours of debating it and working up the courage to bring it to the cashier it was mine for 4.99.
I brought it home,tried it on, then proceeded to prance around in it for a while. I was shocked that the 100% acrylic yarn actually felt somewhat nice.
I thought over possibilities that night while looking at the supplies I had on hand and went to work the next day. The black diagonal line reminded me of a motorcycle jacket so I went with it. First thing to go was the blue turtleneck and weird blue fabric accent. Next I took off the black ribbing on the bottom. I cut the front of the dress following the black diagonal line running up the front then applied fray check, sewed on some double fold bias tape and applied the zipper. Next I re-sized the body of the sweater and the sleeves.

Now I present to you the finished product
I used the black ribbing from the bottom of the dress to create the collar which overlaps in front and closes using snaps. The blue button is only decorative.
