Toddlers look so darn cute in even the ugliest things. I knew I wanted to make something using ties and knew that I would not have a problem finding some ugly ones.

I head out to my favorite thrift store, De Kring Winkel, here in Antwerp, Belgium. I picked up 4 ties and one super hideous, cargo vest for kids. The vest reminded me the parachute pants I used to wear in grammer school. The total cost for the 5 items was 6,25 Euro or about $9.40.

It took me a few days to figure out the best way to utilize all the fabric since I knew I would need just about all of it. Seam ripping is not one of my favorite things, so I put that off for a while. I knew that I did not want the dress to be symmetrical so I pieced the fabric around the pattern I made. It was important to me to use the pockets from the vest as cargo pockets on either side of the dress. I was also able to use the arm holes of the vest as the collar for the dress. I left portions of it decunstructed.

If you cannot tell, it is difficult to make 19 month olds pose for pictures.
I used just about all of the fabric I had. I did not add any additional materials with the exception of thread. I was even able to reuse the button! I am happy with the final result, now get to the office!

I LOVE the dress!  Who would have thought there was a good use for ugly ties?

Oh this is adorable! I love the mix of the ties. This makes me wish I had kept more of my dads ties. I could've made something similar for my grand-daughter.
