I have recently decided that button making is just about the best way to use up polymer clay canes.  This could be because I have an unhealthy love for buttons.  I collect them, you see, and figuring out ways to make your own collection is just awesome.

A bit on process: I used little cutters for all but the squid (I've got some that are sold for polymer clay, and have found even cooler ones of the appropriate size in the baking section of the craft store; they're intended for fondant icing).  To get the edges neatly rounded, I spread plastic wrap over the top of the polymer clay and pressed the cutter down on the plastic wrap.  Each button was buffed with a fabric buffing wheel and my beloved Dremel, hand-polished with felt, and then sealed with a glossy polyurethane coat, mostly because I like things shiny.  The holes are the last step- I tried a few methods, and decided that dremeling them out post-polyurethane looked best (though it made an unholy mess).  This could be because I also have an unhealthy love for my Dremel.

There's all sorts in all sizes; citrus and checkers and eyeballs and glow-in-the-dark stars and even toggle-like squid, as seen above.

The giant star button is probably my favorite- it's HUGE, and the stars actually glow.  I was hoping to actually put specific constellations on the star buttons (for I am nerd), but it didn't work on my first attempt.  Try try again!  Meanwhile, I think this giant one needs to go on a bulky knit hat.

Because normal button eyes aren't creepy enough.  Please ignore the bad photo editing; sometimes (particularly since I've been using a really cheap loaner camera after my camera died an untimely death) I just kind of give up.  I dream of getting an ubercamera and adding photography to my list of hobbies.

I plan to give some of 'em away for Sew Mama Sew's Giveaway Day, and I was hoping for a little last-minute input: what's your favorite?  Thank you!

(PS: that star-shaped checker button is probably my second favorite.)

so cute! what a great idea. You're really good at making canes. I like both types of star canes best. And that lemon-lime is quite intriguing.

The final verdict, from this and other posts about the web, is that I will give away squid buttons, lemon buttons, and single eyeball buttons.  It's up on my blog if you want in on it!

I need to make more of the star cane.  I can't bear to part with the big button, but it's popular.
