This is my latest Sculpey work and the largest thing I've done to date.  The entire thing measures about 16" wide x 16" long x 20" tall.  The figure is made from sculpey (with a wire and tinfoil form to lighten it up and allow me to use fewer sculpting material), the shirt and tie are hand stitched from fabric (had to figure out a pattern as I went) and the cards are hand painted on hardboard. I didn't originally intend for the figure to be bald, but I loved the shape of his head so much that I decided to leave it visible.    I used no photo references or models other than feeling my own face and looking at my own hand occasionally.  I haven't been sculpting for long (this is the 4th - or is it the 5th - 3 dimensional thing I've done) but I find it INCREDIBLY relaxing and right now with my hectic school life I need that (desperately).

And so here it is (posed photo):

I used just basic craft acrylic (Ceramcoat & Anita's) on all of the painting of the cards and figure......nothing special or fancy.

I am now, and will get my BFA at the age of 41. I was in the Engineering field for 15 years (+3 years of college studying Engineering) because I didn't think it would be "practical" to go to art school.  I really wish I'd followed a different path and gone to art school to begin with, but at least I'm doing it now. Before attending art school I drew with a #2 pencil, pens and markers and that was it (other than crafting).  Painting (oil and watercolor), colored pencil drawings and sculpting are all new to me still.  I LOVE it!

i went and had a look at your profile and if i'd recognised your username i wouldn't have been surprised by the amazingness of this piece.  the others that you have posted (in your favorite own projects) are all extremely memorable!

i think you have made absolutely the right decision with the plan to be a professional artist, because you seem to have the right combination of skill/ideas/drive to actually make it work.
i say this as a vaguely artistic person who almost went to art school and didn't, and i think that was right for me because i don't have that combination for art (i seem to somewhat be developing it for my actual profession, though, so that's ok).

That's incredible - you have a serious talent for sculpting.  He is amazing - his face and his hand are so expressive, and the whole thing is beautifully painted.  The effect of water on the cards is amazing.  Even his shirt and tie are incredible.  And of course the concept is so clever.  Wow.  This seriously rocks.

Stop being so damned positive. Staring at the sun only blinds some one. By only looking at the positive, you miss an entire beautiful world of shadows and colors. Don't be overly negative, be realistic. The world is so much more complex and beautiful that way.
