And here's more great things!

The book I sent Ma Rut to alter is a 1950s Readers Digest publication called "The Art of Living," and I asked her to pick one of the articles within it and use it as a theme. I think she found the best (and by best I mean the worst actual article) one in the book: "How to Be Loved by a Man":

The article was written by actress Marlene Dietrich and it's an awful stereotypically 1950s perspective, so bad that it's hard to believe it was really published as honest advice. So Ma Rut gave it an appropriate (and BEAUTIFUL!) update, which is that little has changed, unfortunately, in the subject...We have to play dumb/dead/straight, for the most part, or else use our feminine wiles to manipulate them into loving or depending on us. Either option sucks--but it does make for some great artwork!
Better view of the section emphasized on the right-hand page:

And on the left-hand side it says, "How often we intend one thing and it turns into another!" which, inidentally (?), ends up looking like a phallic object squashing the woman's face. (: I love the design and color and all the elements of this spread, in addition to what it's saying. It makes me smile every time I open the book.  Grin

And she sent me a crocheted pillow as a complete surprise--In exactly the kinds of colors I described in my profile as things I've been hung up on lately! (tinges of metallic in purples, rusts, oranges) I LOOOOVE it!

Close-up of some of the yarns--when I look at the details that makes me smile even more, because I know she sought out just the right varieties of yarn, which is so characteristically sweet of her!

Oddly, receiving an item like this is what makes me long to have a living space of my own again--so I could put this out on display on a couch--out of all the possible reasons why I might want my own place!

I'm so glad I sent that rainbow weaving along with my package; I was debating whether to or not and thought, "What if she sends ME some kind of surprise item and I don't send one to her even though I have this sitting here? I would feel like such a schmuck!"  Cheesy So it seems we were on the same wavelength, sending each other fuzzy, bright comfort items along with the agreed-upon papercrafting. Thanks for such an enjoyable and lovely package, Ma Rut, and for swapping with me!

That's an awesome altered book. Strong visual message about stereotypes! Marlene Dietrich must have been exceptionally cynic the day she wrote that article (or accepted it to be published under her name) Grin
