I am making an afghan. It's slated to be done in April. I'd love to do it with someone, my chart's all yours!
It's for the boyfriend for our 2-year anniversary. It’s a pixelated 8-bit attempt at Link in Link to the Past. Here are the sprites I based my pattern on.http://www.retrogamezone.co.uk/Sprites/SNES/legendofzelda3sheet1.gif

This is an [updated 11/24/09] screenshot of my pattern in Microsoft Excel.

I just did a chart for the colors. Each square is equivalent to a granny square.

He's been revised to make the sword brighter.

Why did I give myself until April, you ask? I’ll tell you: each of those blocks is a 1.5″ granny square. There are 950 of them. So besides making them, I need to sew them all together. I had to order more than twenty 3.5 oz skeins of grey yarn.

Here is a granny square tutorial (http://www.crochetcabana.com/tutorials/granny_square.htm), if you’d like to crochet along. Each of my squares is two rounds.

I’m using primarily Vanna’s Choice acrylic yarn, worsted weight, although the white is Caron and the bright blue is Red Heart Soft. The Caron is done with an H hook, and everything else with an I, although some odd yarn needed even a J! There’s a lot of variability between brands, so each time, I do a test square against another to make sure they are uniform in size.

I’m done with the yellow, white, green, and red. Here’s a breakdown of squares needed, by color:

[revised]6 slate blue
8 yellow
[revised]23 bright blue
9 orange
13 pink
[revised]21 white
14 brown
19 red
[revised]23 bright blue
35 flesh
56 green
155 black
591 grey

That’s right. 591 grey squares. Oh, the monotony! This boy is very fortunate that I love him.

I’m going to try to crochet 50 squares a week until March, which gives me a month and a half to sew these together.

Update: I've crocheted three skeins of grey yarn this week! That's around 100 squares. [11/21/09]

That's ironic!

I looked up that vanna yarn and ALAS! I HAS IT!

I think I'll try this afghan Smiley I have red, saver yarn. I think I'll go to walmart/crafter store and buy me some yarn.

Do you use the aluminum hooks? I usually use my Afghan I hook cause it's so comfy. Cheesy

So 2 rows, you mean the inital 4 and then the other 4 corners... 8!

Just making sure. I've only made 2 in my lifetime.

I've been itching to do a big crochet project.  I think I'll join you with a chart I made for frog Mario from Super Mario Bros 3.  I was having trouble deciding what to do, then I realized that my frog bathroom didn't have a rug.

I won't be adding any extra squares around Mario, so that will cut down on a lot of the granny squares.

Green squares - 114
Black squares - 153
Tan squares - 62
Total = 329

Does anybody have any suggestions on how to make this using Tunisian crochet? I've never done a graphghan...but Tunisian seems slightly less work.
