Funny how you start out to create something one way and it ends up turning out completely different than what you had in mind. I have told people in the past that when I'm sculpting it's almost as if I step out of my body and am watching the process as an onlooker. I think this is when my muse has her way and she and the art just do whatever they want.

That's what happened with my newest ornament. It's so far from where I thought I'd go with it that I must have not only stepped out of my body, I left the room completely.

Sculpted in paperclay

Very awesome!!  How big is it?  Those bells look really small.

You're an amazing paperclay artist.  I've never had luck with the stuff.  It always turns out lumpy.

habitat-lady - from top of wire to bottom of moon it's about 5 1/2 inches.

Thank you everyone, so glad you all like it.

I am big on using polymer clay, but I've never tried paper clay. The moon is amazing. I love the details, down to the eyelids. Is it hard to work with? Sounds it from some of the other comments! Great job!

I love polymer clay as well but for larger pieces sculpting with paperclay allows me to use the same sculpting techniques and tools that I used when sculpting clay for bronzes.

The difficulty really depends on the paperclay you use or make. I'm currently using Creative Paperclay. I buy it at wholesale price which makes it pretty affordable. You can get it directly from their site and if you buy $50 worth you get the wholesale price, which is 50% off retail. They send it to you in 8oz packages which is great, no worries about a big box drying out before you can use it. I just store the unopend packs in one of those plastic drawers and open one at a time to use. Oh, $50 will get you about 9 1/2 lbs if I remember correctly from my last order.

If you're making your own clay one trick to get it smooth is to start out with small pieces of paper. I use a paper shreddar to get thin strips. I mix my ingredients in an old blender and that really makes a smooth clay. I also only mix small amounts at a time, and I work on several pieces at the same time to use up the handmade clay.

I think it's wonderful! Just out of curiosity, where did you see it going when you began?
