I'm a new member and a new 'seamstress'. I haven't used a sewing machine since I was in grade 10. I don't want to tell you how long ago that was, but I have a son in grade nine so....
I originally wanted to make my daughter the Queen of hearts costume, so I bought the heart fabric and a red satin sheet from the second hand store. But then she found a green dress and decided she wanted to be a woodland fairy. I already had the fabric so I decided to make the costume for myself and my hubby. Of course My costume ended up being a lot more 'grown-up' than the one I would have made for her.
I purchased a plain white bustier for $10 a few months ago. I sewed the fabric to it in pieces. I then used some velvet ribbon from my Christmas crafts for the strap around my neck. The skirt was made from 3 yards of red sateen, and one yard of the heart fabric.
I made the tutu under the skirt by cutting strips of tulle and tying them to an elastic.
You can see the tutu from under my skirt here. What you can't see is that I actually sewed some red short, shorts to wear underneath just in case.
I sewed his coat from a sheet I purchased at a second hand store. I originally made it without the puffy sleeves, but it was too tight in the arms so I took it apart and added the hearts. The 'fur' trim is cut from a faux fur coat left over from Halloweens past.
My 'crown' was made from valentines picks, all wrapped around each other and clipped into my hair.
I made the necklace from one old pearl necklace and a few strings of pearls I bought at the craft store.
He actually bought the crown. He took off the gold parts, cut the heart fabric to size, ironed on some interfacing, & used some of the iron on stitch witch, before sewing it back on to the crown.
The aftermath. This is my sewing room after I made the King and Queen costumes. You can see the ancient sewing machine given to me by my mother-in-law. Works great as long as you don't touch the tension.
