I was inspired by the mario quilt.  I don't have any good pictures at the moment, just one of me working on it.  I was pinning the edges together, I think.  You can imagine two other space guys.  The quilt is kinda uneven, but it was my first.  And I had no clue what I was getting into.  I'll put up a better picture when I get it.  Oh, and I think I spent a couple days on this.  I know that sounds nuts, but I worked on it for a day or two, and then put it off until 3 days before Christmas, and just did it then.

There's a better picture.  The back is solid dark green.  Oh yeah, and I noticed that the black squares look differently shaded.  I'm not sure why because they all came from the same piece of fabric.  Oh well.  Maybe it's the flash?

Awesome!  This (and the Mario quilt) has made me really inspired to try quilting again.  I'd love to make a Duck Hunt quilt.  Do you have any advice/resources for beginning quilters?  I made a baby blanket once, but that was over 10 years ago and I never finished it.

I think what I like best about the quilt is the subtle variation of the black squares.  Who knew Space Invaders could be subtle?

This put a huge, huge smile on my face!!!!

I've never quilted, but I REALLY want to start. So, what do I do? I've sewn before. I understand cutting the blocks and whatnot, but do you iron seams, and then finish the seams? or do u just quilt it all then put batting and backing and squiggle it all...?

I have a lot of ideas for this type stuff.

That's fantastic.

And the reason why the black squares look differently coloured is probably because some were sewn along the grain and some against the grain. The flash brings it out.

Well, I don't know how you're supposed to actually quilt, but all I did was sew my squares into strips, then iron the seams flat.  Then I attached the strips to eachother and ironed the seams again, and then ironed again at the end.  As for the batting, backing and front, I sewed them together around three edge when they were inside out, turn it right side out, sew shut the fourth side, and top stitch around it.  Then I tacked the layers together at points all over quilt.  My second quilt I used yarn tied all over, but this one I used thread.  Hopefully that helps a little, but if not, I suggest just checking out the library for some beginner books, or search out someone else on this site, becasue I really dont know how to quilt.

Totally awesome. I've only done more traditional designs, but I really like this idea.

For those new to quilting, some terminology.

Technically, this is a comforter not a quilt. A quilt must be quilted -- this is "tied". So, while it's patchwork, it's not a patchwork quilt. The terms get confused a lot, especially in the US. And it isn't terribly important, but I thought some might like to know.

Usually in patchwork the seams are 1/4 inch and are pressed to one side, not open. That's to reduce bulk at the intersections. Of course, it completely depends on the pattern whether or not open seams will reduce bulk. But if you've got four squares coming together, and the seams are pressed open, there's a sort of lump at the intersection.

If the seams are pressed to one side in a sort of spiral pattern, the seams interlock or mesh at the intersection, and it's much flatter. This is difficult to explain in words. There's a decent picture at:

http://catalog.hsn.com/article-23/435/hp.htm

Getting this to work out isn't as hard as it might sound, and there are techniques for assembly that make it easier to do. But it certainly isn't a requirement.

What an awesome quilt! I was thinking of doing something like this for my brother's birthday....and a Zelda one would be so cool. Hmmm I wonder how you would make a Zelda theme?

I think the reason they look different it because of the "grain" of the fabric, and also some might be flipped over. I'm sure it looks just fine in person, give it character Smiley
