(fun with photoshop background)
I *loved* my costume this year! Very happy with how it turned out. I made everything, and the only ready-made item I bought this year was the gold snake coil bracelet.
The Grecian style dress is a folded over rectangle of muslin (bought the 45" width so didn't even have to hem the sides) with the neck hole cut out. The armholes are left open and the sides sewn close leaving the bottom slits open. I then dip dyed the bottom in RIT dye with kelly green, then a dark green, then black. It's belted at the waist with gold cord from the craft store. The shoulders are gathered and pinned.
You can't really see in the photos but also tied gold yarn to the sides of my sandles and criss-crossed it up my legs to make a roman like sandle. I'm also wearing fangs from a previous vampire costume. Those Gorgons are fierce!
Some of my favorite parts was my makeup! (This shot taken before rest of costume on in my oh-so-stylish wig cap). I painted on snake eyes on my eyelids so when I closed my eyes they still looked open. This more than anything freaked people out! People leaped back going "Creepy!" all night, ha- it was fun. The "snake skin" patterning in green was done by pulling fishnet tights over my face and applying the makeup over it. Several tutorials for this on youtube.com.
The wig. It was an inexpensive one from walmart that I took some gold ribbon and made a type of circlet across my forehead and then weaved it into braids that pulled back the hair from my temples. I then sewed lots of plastic snakes into it. And sewed, and sewed. Did it in front of the tv over several nights though so not so bad. (I actually added more snakes after this photo was taken by bobby pinning a few in around my face too).
And a detailed shot of the shoulder closures. I found these roman coin style earrings at a thrift store and cut off the back post and glued on a pin back. Then pinned them through the gathers. (The necklace and earrings I had from my wedding in India, worked great).
I wish I had gotten more photos as this was definitely one of my favorite costumes!
