12/01/09 - The entry board is open!  http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?board=433.0

Some of you might remember when we did the Super Ugly to Super Awesome challenge back in 2007.  Well, now it's time to do it again!

Your challenge this month is to spend $20 or less at a thrift store and buy something super ugly, tacky or otherwise abominable and revamp it into something totally awesome.  You must take pictures of the item in its original state, so we can see both the before and the after.  Your purchase can be a piece of artwork, clothing, figurine, statue, platter, furniture, whatever!  You decide.  You can purchase more than one item at the thrift store as long as your total is $20 or less and your items somehow come together in the same theme of the project.  If you're not located in the U.S., you can spend the equivalent of $20 USD in your own currency.

Rules:

  • Post your craft during the period of Dec 1 - Dec 5 2009. No sooner.  No later.  On Dec 1 there will be a special folder created for entries.
  • Voting will happen from Dec 6 - Dec 12 2009.
  • Each participant can enter ONE project (Although your entry can have multiple components to it).

Originality:

It's probably impossible to know whether your project is 100% original and has never been posted on Craftster or made by anyone else in the past.  But if your project was definitely inspired by something you've seen before, then just give credit to that project.

Prizes:

At the end, I'll set up a poll right here and the first place winner will get...

(1) their project in the Featured Projects area
(2) their project in the Craftster Blog

And this prize (winner can receive prize in U.S. or non-U.S.):

Any one item from one of Craftster's online shops!

I was not around for the 07 challenge so this is new to me. It sounds absolutely fabulous.

I do have a question, does the item(s) have to retain their original use or style (not sure this is the right word for what I am asking). For example, if someone found a hideous painting, does the original art still need to be visible? Or a dress does it still need to be a dress or even a piece of clothing? I might be thinking too much into this, but it would be my first challenge so I do not want to mess anything up.

Great question!  The purchased item does not have to retain its original function.  For example, you could buy a very ugly sweater and turn it into an awesome bag.  Or you could buy the world's ugliest couch and turn it into a desk.

What about additional supplies needed (paints, thread, etc.) are there any guidelines regarding this?  Do they get included in the total cost?

THANKS! Smiley

I was wondering the same thing sort of - like, what if you are recovering something - does the fabric have to be from the thrift shop too?

Curious about this as well...I recently purchased a bulk clothing haul (one car load of left over garage sale mystery clothing for $30 ) could I use something from this?

Or if you don't have a thrift store in your area, is a T.J. Maxx-type everything-the-normal-stores-don't-want-anymore store alright?

Definitely no retail chain stores for this challenge.

Try to stick to thrift stores, but if you don't have one in your area, perhaps you could find a yard, garage sale or curb find.

Not for this particular challenge.  Part of the challenge this time is the hunt for the ugly item! Cheesy

It would probably be fun to go out and find something just for this challenge (be it at the thrift store or from a dumpster).  We don't require receipt scans for this challenge, so use your best judgement.

What about additional supplies needed (paints, thread, etc.) are there any guidelines regarding this?  Do they get included in the total cost?

THANKS! Smiley

I was wondering the same thing sort of - like, what if you are recovering something - does the fabric have to be from the thrift shop too?

Your main/ugly item should be from the thrift store, but additional supplies can be from your stash, from other stores, etc.  Additional supplies do not need to be included in your total cost.

Yay! I just bought enough items at the thrift store for not 1, but actually 3 specific ugly-to-awesome projects. Haha. Now to see which one makes the cut (AKA a) that I finish it; and b) that it's the most impressive).

Great question!  A charity shop would fit the scope of this challenge perfectly.

<---excited to see the entries. I'm curious about how we'll judge the "ugliness" content at the onset. . .I guess it's more net turnaround and "Wow" factor (before/after) than what you started with...

I'm excited!

How about if I didn't buy the thing at the thrift store, but ruined something by burning holes in it, making it trash, and then finding a way to turn the ugly burn holes into the focal point? This is the case with a piece of clothing I was re-making. I could always go to the thrift-store to buy some ugly stuff to finish the outfit with... would that be  OK? "cause if it is, I think I have myself a project!
Or, how about something I already started but haven't finished yet, that was super ugly from the thrift store? That was an ugly 80's...... that I am planning to turn into a pretty.....Do I have to actually go and spend new money?

It would be best to use something from the thrift store rather than trashing something you already have.  Whether you went to the thrift store and got it for this particular challenge or not, we'll never really know, but it would be ideal if you did. Smiley

Ok. It's just that a silk skirt I was re-making had an accident with my stencil burner, and in the car yesterday, a light-bulb went off in my head, and I saw a way to turn it into a masterpiece! But, I won't use it for this!
Otherwise, I don't know If I have time to go get anything ready, with a swap to finish up by the 5th!

I scored a truck load, yes a truck load of free leftover estate sale items, to include some utensils, lots of fabric, notions, ugly lamps with no shades, toys, books, etc. I will have to figure out which is the ugliest, and figure out a make over plan. I can always use it for a gift for someone. (They will never know) Cool

There were a lot of books and fabric so maybe I can fashion some type of shade? Got me thinking now. My last straw challenge fizzled. Anyone need some plastic straws. Smiley
