Craft Challenge #45 - Super Ugly to Super Awesome Round 2 - Due Dec 1 - Dec 5

Some of you might remember when we did the Super Ugly to Super Awesome challenge back in 2007.  Well, now it's time to do it again!

Your challenge this month is to spend $20 or less at a thrift store and buy something super ugly, tacky or otherwise abominable and revamp it into something totally awesome.  You must take pictures of the item in its original state, so we can see both the before and the after.  Your purchase can be a piece of artwork, clothing, figurine, statue, platter, furniture, whatever!  You decide.  You can purchase more than one item at the thrift store as long as your total is $20 or less and your items somehow come together in the same theme of the project.  If you're not located in the U.S., you can spend the equivalent of $20 USD in your own currency.

Rules:

  • Post your craft during the period of Dec 1 - Dec 5 2009. No sooner.  No later.  On Dec 1 there will be a special folder created for entries.
  • Voting will happen from Dec 6 - Oct Dec 2009.
  • Each participant can enter ONE project (Although your entry can have multiple components to it).

Originality:

It's probably impossible to know whether your project is 100% original and has never been posted on Craftster or made by anyone else in the past.  But if your project was definitely inspired by something you've seen before, then just give credit to that project.

Prizes:

At the end, I'll set up a poll right here and the first place winner will get...

(1) their project in the Featured Projects area
(2) their project in the Craftster Blog

And this prize (winner can receive prize in U.S. or non-U.S.):

Any one item from one of Craftster's online shops!

I was not around for the 07 challenge so this is new to me. It sounds absolutely fabulous.

I do have a question, does the item(s) have to retain their original use or style (not sure this is the right word for what I am asking). For example, if someone found a hideous painting, does the original art still need to be visible? Or a dress does it still need to be a dress or even a piece of clothing? I might be thinking too much into this, but it would be my first challenge so I do not want to mess anything up.

Great question!  The purchased item does not have to retain its original function.  For example, you could buy a very ugly sweater and turn it into an awesome bag.  Or you could buy the world's ugliest couch and turn it into a desk.

Can I use my dumpster find that I have been working on instead of purchasing another item at a thrift store?

What about additional supplies needed (paints, thread, etc.) are there any guidelines regarding this?  Do they get included in the total cost?

THANKS! Smiley

Yay! This was such a good contest. I'm getting my sister into it, and we're going thrift shopping for ugliness!

I was wondering the same thing sort of - like, what if you are recovering something - does the fabric have to be from the thrift shop too?

Curious about this as well...I recently purchased a bulk clothing haul (one car load of left over garage sale mystery clothing for $30 ) could I use something from this?
