wizard of Oz - Dorothy and the Twister

My daughter wanted to be Dorothy from the wizard of Oz this year because she saw the movie. I made her costume using a  simplicty pattern  4139 and stayed pretty true to the pattern.

I wanted to do a companion costume - I usually spend so much time on my daughters that I have no time for mine. Did not want to be tine man or the other characters. I was looking around the web and saw some storm/cloud costumes and it made me think of the twister in the movie - one of the scariest/best scenes. So I googled tornado costumes and did not come up with much.


Thought I could do better. I bought two yards of latch hook rug backing - stiff and not made of vinyl. I trimmed it and added velcro to hold it on. I mad arm holes and used straps. I bought halloween spider mesh, but not enough! I got 4 bags and could have used much more. I tied on things I found at Good will (little houses, a boat, a minature person on a bike) and borrowed doll furniture, lego trees and hot whell cars from my daughter. I put them on strings so they would move when I did.  Fun!

Thanks for all the nice comments! I did not realize how hard it would be to "wrap" it with the spider web - it didn't have as much coverage as I imagined. I had my daughter standing on a step stool holding it up while I wrapped. Her arms got tired out pretty quickly so I had to just go with it. It was still alot of fun being out and having people "get it."
