In my awkward pubescent years, I had a classmate who would make fun of my hair and call me Miss Frizzle because I hadn't yet figured out my hair would curl and it made this big poofy mass around my head.  (Having big thick glasses didn't help me much either!)  This Halloween, I decided to pay homage to myself at age 12 and to one of my very favorite elementary tv shows.

The dress was a recon from Goodwill I bought for $3 with sleeves that were supposed to be 3/4, a skirt that nearly reached my ankles, and shoulder pads comparable to ones a football player would wear:

I took out the pads, cut off the sleeves (the leftover fabric from when I took out the shoulder pads was just enough to make short sleeves) and hemmed the dress.  Then I painted it with moons, planets, a rocket ship, an astronaut, etc.
The shoe stars and earrings were made with wood cutouts painted yellow and glittered.  For the former I glued bobby pins to the back and pinned them on my shoes for the latter I used a screwdriver to make a hole and put in a fish hook earring,

Front:

Back:

(The hem isn't really that wonky, I took the pic from a weird angle.)

I also brought Liz along!

LOVE!  This is adorable!!  This would be so sweet for an elementary school teacher to wear.  LOVED these books and the tv show.  Great job!

What a perfect costume - very creative re-use of the dress. Nicely done - and lots of detail. How long did it take you?

The show is called The Magic School Bus & it's about a teacher with a magic bus that takes her students on fantastic field trips like into outer space, inside the human body, etc.  We used to watch it all the time as elementary school kids in the 90's.  I had to jog a few people's memories when I went out!

Thanks!  It really wasn't incredibly time consuming... I would've appliqued the decorations but I'm right in the middle of nursing exams at the moment, so that definitely didn't happen.  All I really had to do was hem the skirt, arm holes, and neck line.  The paint took the longest time because I had to let it dry overnight, and the star accessories took probably 10 minutes max.  I'd say work time would be maybe 3 hours total though. AHA!  I was thinking Magic School Bus, but I couldn't be sure because I only ever saw the commercials!

Truly awesome!  As soon as I saw the quote, I almost screamed - it's Miss Frizzle!  Even in high school, I would find myself watching that show...terribly entertaining it was...!

I used to try to dress like miss frizzle as a kid. This was my favorite of her outfits. The dress is so cute you could wear it even not as a costume!

But then you put all the accessories with it and wham! Super cute costume!

I live by Ms. Frizzle's rules! You did a great job and picked such a great/unique character. Did people realize who you were?

I have a lot of curly hair too; it took me years to learn how to handle all the frizz!
Awesome job on the costume, and I love your avatar!

Thanks to everyone for being so amazingly supportive!  This was definitely my first homemade costume and I love that everyone is so positive! Smiley

RougeRaven, when I went out it was kind of odd because pretty much anyone into their thirties didn't really know who I was.  I have to tell you though, when someone would ask me who I was and I'd say, "Remember the Magic School Bus?" you'd see the recognition click in their face and I generally got a response like "OH SHI-!  I WISH YOU HAD THE LIZARD!"  Then I'd hold up Liz and get an even funnier reaction! haha.  There was a handfull of people who knew me right off the bat... I went into one bar and I swear two girls screamed for at least five minutes! lol, it was definitely an interesting night!

This is actually pure genius. Soo fantastic! I love Miss Frizzle - I gotta dig out some of my old books when I get home sometime. Love how simple/crafty it was, yet how clean and professional the final product looked.

Also, not gonna lie, I dig those giant star earrings haha.

Haha, it's really funny that you got those reactions - I recognized it but didn't know who it was at first, but then it's SUCH a kick to realize, haha.

Seriously, thank you everyone for being so amazing.  I've definitely been inspired to post some more crafts when I'm not running after patients and learning disease processes/drug treatments. lol.

oops... What can I say?  It's a lot easier for me to remember her voice and the animations than anything else.  I started reading early so by the time we began watching the show in class I was onto bigger and more advanced text.  If I did read them, I was wayy young.  I remember being in kindergarten and my teacher having to borrow books from second grade teachers for me to read! lol Smiley
