I love them, too, especially for their quirky individuality!

Last year I made a custom set for a six year old with words she didn't have in her "educational" set....like her name, and Texas, and minivan, and you get the idea... but I didn't think to use the magnet tape. I actually found a magnet sheet that would go through an inkjet printer ( I think I found it at Hobby Lobby), so I had to very carefully block out the words and font and size, to fit on the page, and to match the set she already had.

Next time I'm going to try your way... it looks WAY cooler!

Very nice.  I think I'll make one of these for my son's girlfriend.  She loves to write.

Great job.

You are my hero today! This is such an awesome idea!!!! I love those sets, but they are ridiculously expensive- and, like you said, the random fonts and colors are much cooler. I'll be definitely making myself a set and I'm thinking this would be a pretty cool idea for holiday gifts as well. And there's the extra appeal of recycling!

In the end, only kindness matters.

Awww thanks for all the great comments I have posted a few craft projects before on Craftster but they've never been so well received!

I really like the sets like this because not only do I get to recycle all my magazines (and friend's magazines) but I can also make specific sets geared towards the person I am making them for. Obviously the word set I would use for a 12 year old girl would be pretty different than a 30 year old man. I have also thought about including a few spare blanks using white paper so that if the recipient really needs a word not there they can add it themselves. As my BGF's (best guy friend) soon to be wife has an unusual name (Ulyanna) I will have to make her name magnet with the white paper and sharpies anyway but usually I can even find the name of the person I making it for in a magazine somewhere or I simply cut out random letters to spell it and put them all close next to each other on the magnet strip and cut it out from there, lucking my BGF has a pretty common name so it wasn't hard to find it in a magazine and cut it out.

I think I will take the suggestion of one of the other commenters had and use a cookie sheet but I'll probably either paint the cookie sheet or cover it with decorative paper.

Someone else mentioned they have magnetic paper you can run through your printer to print off words and pictures with as well. I haven't tried it yet but I did see it in Micheal's and thought that might be cool too but with my method I can just sit in front of the Tv or in the living room and talk to my roomies while I craft which I enjoy, makes me feel less bad about sitting in front of the Tv if I am actually doing something productive while I watch ;

I am so stealing this idea. I've been working on and off on a list to make my own for a few weeks now... but this is so much cooler!  Cheesy

If anybody makes magnetic poetry it would be really awesome if you could post your word list.

This is such a cool idea! I might have to borrow it to make some Xmas gifts... and, of course, a set for myself.   Cheesy
