So my boyfriend's brother who is also my best guy friend loves to write poetry (specifically Haikus but I digress) and is a wonderful writer and as I am currently unemployed and so trying to make at aleast some of my christmas gifts for those I love I came up with this for him.

They're like the magnets you can buy at Border's or elsewhere except better (Imho) because unlike the ones you buy in sets at the store they fonts and letters don't all look the same.

Here's the pictures of what I have so far (it was hard to get a good pic of them on my black refrigerator because the flash reflected too much so sorry the pictures aren't better!)

They were pretty easy to make and I make em while watching TV, plus it helps that I am recycling the words out of magazines and old books I have lying around. The magnets for the project were my only expense and it was 6.99 for a roll of the magnet tape at Micheal's and I have only used about half of it so far, and have done these words using only a couple hours for the past two nights. I am almost finished but feel like I want a few more verbs and nouns to finish the set off. My boyfriend thinks they're cool (he made the first poem pictured) and that his brother will love them.

So anyway if you have someone who loves words, poetry, or general writing this is a really easy, fun and cheap (but not cheap looking) gift to make them.

I had a magnetic poetry calendar and it is now missing a few words, being 4 years old or so. I should take your idea to replace and enhance them!

Great Idea! I'm making four cookie sheet magnet boards and was going to buy the store brand but I love yours so much more. Did you just glue the magazine words on the magnets?

No you can actually buy a roll of magnetic tape stuff at Micheal's or JoAnn's or any other craftstore. The stuff I bought cost me $6.99 (actually it cost less because I had a 40% off of any one item from the Micheal's flyer in my junk mail).

I have included pictures of the stuff I bought so you'll be able to recognize it when you see it. It actually is a strip of magnet and when you pull off the white backing it already has the glue/tape on the magnet so you don't need to do anything but cut out your word (from old magazines or books or whatever) peel back the white cover on the strip slap the word down and then cut it with regular old scissors to the size you want it.

*Tip remember to cut out a few es and 's and n't, 't, ly and regular s so that they can be added to the ends of other words to create plurals, possessives or contractions. You can make a word magnet for Do or can and with the extra pieces the person can also make Can't and Don't if their poem/writing calls for it or they can turn with ly create plainly from plain.

Here is the roll all whole:

Here is another picture of the roll so you can see approx. thickness:

Here is a roll showing the pull back white part and tape:

The tag on the tape (I got at Micheal's so might be a different brand at JoAnn's or where ever) says:
ProMAG #12325
1/2" X25'

Or you can visit their website and order it from there it's $3.95 there but with shipping will probably cost about the same as picking it up at the craftstore (its about 1/2 down the page)

I love your idea of a cookie sheet as the magnet board which I may actually do myself because that's a cute idea Smiley

Thanks to everyone else for the cheers it makes me feel good that I am not the only one who thinks they're fun! The pictures really don't do them justice they're so cute I will make myself a set after the holidays.
