that looks crocheted not knitted and i'm guessing that its a basket weave.

I know a variation of that pattern - but not that exact one.  It is crocheted.  You chain the length you want it then sc across, (turn, sc across)a few times until the width you want then you weave your strips together, sc around and bam you are done.  I don't have that exact one - and I'm not even sure where my copy is.  It was in a book and was only for blocks not an entire afghan made with the weaving and all..
