I've been a long time lurker of this site but have never actually posted anything soooo here goes.

I found an old desk at the salvation army that I thought might have some potential. Unfortunately I don't have any before pictures but it was an ugly offwhite/yellowish speckled paint. After a few hours of sanding a ton, a couple coats of paint, fine sanding and a few layers of protective gloss coating on top to make it stain resistant this is what I came out with..

Here are a few pictures:








I kept the original hardware because it matched the detailing..

There's a few things that could be better when you look at it up close but it was my first piece of furniture.

Comments, criticism, etc. more than welcome!

When we were first married (many MANY years ago) we did almost the exact same thing. We bought a wooden desk (not nearly so ornate as yours) at Salvation Army and repainted it almost exactly that same turquoise color, except we painted the drawers a greenish olive color, and we still have and use that desk today!

This looks great. The details on those drawers are fantastic.
I've been seeing a lot of this turquoise color used lately in revamping home furnishings. It really adds a quirky spark to a room. Might have to try it for myself!

this looks awesome! you didn't happen to find it at fantastic thrift in richmond, va did you? because i saw a desk i think EXACTLY like this with the nasty yellow paint and everything few weeks ago there. i saw it and totally went "if only i had an expendable income!" if so, that's crazy and it's a small world! if not, nevermind, lollerskates. 8D

How long did it take to finish? Looks like you did a perfect job...

Thanks. It took me a lot longer than it should have seeing as it was my first piece to do so I had to learn everything and figure out things the hard way. The sanding was the worst part b/c of all the curves and details (there are definitely a few places that I somewhat squared off where it's supposed to be round, ha) plus I have a black and decker mouse that's really small...

Sanding probably took a good .. 4 or 5 hours ? If not a little longer, idk. Painting a few coats took a total of maybe 2 hrs.. Gloss took a total of maybe 30 minutes...

The detailing on the drawers is great and how wonderful that you didn't have to do it. I wonder if the  handles were sprayed painted black or a very dark complementary blue if it would have a more dramatic effect.

I just painted my first piece of furniture too and I'm beginning to think that it's going to be addictive.

The color is gorgeous! Fantastic choice. I'm about to start working on a side table and I think I might be going for a color very similar to that one now.

I think the handles are very nice the way they are. I like the cream/blue combo.
