I have a couple office chairs I plan to cover with some ikea fabric.  Do I need to (or should I) wash the fabric first?

If you plan on making it removable so you can wash them as they get dirty....then yes I would suggest prewashing.  If your just stapling it to the chair, then I don't think it matters.
