baby gift for ex-Phishheads

okay, this guy that works with my boyfriend's wife is having a baby boy in about 2 months.  i knit, sew, and attempt to crochet.   any fun, unique, but not too 'awww! how cute!' baby gift ideas?  you can find tons for girls but not much for boys!  i think it's gender discrimination!

Tie-dyed baby blanket? Homemade little grateful dead bear? A patchwork hippie hat (kind of like a big floppy cabbie hat i think), only baby sized? Homemade fabric diapers if they want to be eco-friendly?

That's a great idea. Even a knitted blanket with rainbow colors would probably look good if you don't want to tiedye. Maybe you could find a pattern where the stripes are wavy or something.

i had a similar issue, actually...as i am a "phishhead," and had a friend having a baby.
she had a girl, and i live in hawaii, so i just took pink aloha ("hawaiian") print fabric and appliqued it onto a plain white baby onesie.
 
you could take this idea farther by appliquing trees, fish, grateful dead bears, etc in a more "hippie" fabric onto a baby onesie.

this is what i did, it took no time at all, and my friend loved it! she;ll be the only baby on the block w/ this one-of-a-kind onesie!




another idea is to make one of those "baby slings"--they have a better sounding name, but i don't know what it is. it's like a hammock thing you tie around your body to carry your baby (maybe tie-dyed or earth tones). 
or a patchwork/corduroy hippie-ish diaper bag?

A baby sling, appliqued onesies, stenciled onesies, knit baby hat, diaper covers, diaper bag, diapers, flannel wipes, baby blanket, pillow (I always layed my daughter on a pillow and she thought she was being held and actually slept), baby mitts. Its basically all about the fabric. Tie dye, bright colors, hemp, hemp knits...

I made a tie dye blanket for my brother and sister-in-law. I used 100% cotton flannel, folded accordion style and dyed in strips. It worked great. The colors were really bright and vibrant. My nephew is now 7 and the blanket still is on the bottom of his bed.

I don't have a pattern but my friend made me one that was the BEST. It was a long rectangle, about 3 feet wide and 12 feet long (tapering to a very thin at each end for the last 2 yards). they are nice because you can use it as a one shoulder sling if you like OR a two shoulder sling. the baby can be upright laying on your chest, breastfeeding, on your back and you can flip them facing out when they are bigger. You have lots of fabric to work with so you can hide your baby when you need/want. Its really wonderful because your shoulders don't get too sore like they do with most slings. I used mine for 2 1/2 years. I dance and even wore mine while in dance class. Super comfy. they are sort of like this

Goodness, I miss their concerts.  I always had such a wonderful time.  Maybe find retro looking adult clothes/fabric and make them into baby clothes.

This makes me want to go into my attic and find my rainbow striped bell bottoms and my thousand color gaudy shirt with crystal buttons (my favorite to wear to their concerts).

Or how about a t-shirt/onesie with Phish quotes, such as:

"Nap time and once again I'm bouncin' round the room"
"Wolfman's brother"
"Slave to the traffic light"

Hehehe...quotes from any of their songs would be hilarious.
