This was made for Gleep for the Dragonriders of Pern Swap.  I had seen several paintings that had embroidery on them and loved the idea. In the books "Thread"(which is silver) is an organism that devours any organic matter, basically anything except water, rock, and metal.  So dragons breathe fire to destroy it in the air.  The fighting dragons are different colors, bronze, brown, blue and green.  The Red Star is actually a planet that brings the thread to the planet Pern.  Hopefully that is enough of a primer for you to understand the painting!

I used a projector for the map(taken from the books)and traced that.  I painted it as a topography map with watercolors. Then I took some of the pages from my DragonSinger book(one of the books) that was falling apart, cut out a dragon shape and gave it a wash of brown.  Then I embroidered it with thread, flames and quotes from songs out of the books.

Quotes are: "A Strand of Silver in the Sky."  And "Dragonmen must fly when thread is in the sky."

"Free the Flame"  Both the flames and thread has metallic thread in it.

"Fly between Blue and Green.  Soar, dive down, Bronze and Brown."  I used the corresponding color for each dragon color.

I also embroidered the Red Star in the upper right corner.  I was so proud I posted this to facebook and 2 people want a painting like it! I really like how this came out and I hope you all do too!

Impressive work.  I like the idea of recycling a page from the book and putting that in there.  Awesome job.

I love embroidery on paintings!!  You did a very nice job, especially with your tiny lettering.  Keep up the good work.

That's awesome!  I love the mixed media map idea too, and you chose great quotes.

Excellent job!

I've never read the books but this looks amazing! Each part (the painting, embroidery, and collage elements) are all wonderfully done.

Thanks! I really love the texture the different media's bring to the piece.  It really wouldn't be the same if the dragon, quotes and everything was painted on.

This is really cool! I love the mixed media of the embroidery and painting and sort of scrapbook feel to it. I would be proud to have a piece like this on my wall. I am going to wist it. Smiley (for real, the one in my profile)
