the weather in georgia switched from mid-august to effing january in two days. there was no middle ground, thus i became a very cold college student. unacceptable. so i got to work... and this resulted:

what we have here is an ordinary striped hat yes?

consider that, on one side of the hat, the last row is dark purple...

and on the other side of the hat, the last row is... light purple?

i think my hat might be slightly mad!

oh, no, wait. i think it's just me that's slightly mad.
it's a spiral hat! and it was soooo frustrating. maybe there's an easier way to make it? I don't know, but I definitely liked my method because i got to show off by working with two different colors at the same time. I'd crochet almost a full circle in one color, then switch over to the other color to go around again. all double crochet until the ends. the ends for each color are 7 hdc, 7 sc, then... a stitch i don't know the name of, all the way to the point where the opposite color changed from a dc to hdc, which gave the hat a nice sturdy brim.

i've never been able to complete a hat before now, because counting out each side to make them all even drove me crazy, but since this was more freeform... I FINISHED IT! whahahahaha! so last but not least, an action shot in my frigid dorm room...  Undecided

I'm guessing the stitch name you're looking for is slip stitch (slst).  Love the hat, by the way.  I've been meaning to crochet a hat for a while now, but usually get distracted with fiddlier projects...

Nice job!
