...trying to get it together

View Profile
« on: February 28, 2004 11:03:42 AM »

Just finished this...only took me about 3 weeks cause I got bored with it before I sewed the ends on...it's for my niece

OK, so I've never posted a tutorial, if you have any questions, lemme know...  here goes...

1.  Decide how big you want your bag to beI cut my ends 20 around.  (I made a paper temp. so that I could trace it.)
Round Pieces to cut:
2 interfacing
2 lining
2 outer material
* Lining was pink, I also used pink as the outer ends*

2.Decide how wide you want the body (for lack of better term), and cut 1 each of interfacing, outer, and lining. *The length should be the circumfrence of the circle + seam allowance*
Sandwich Lining, interfacing, and outer material, and sew all pieces together, right sides out, so that it can be worked with like its one piece.

3. For the straps:
*I think it would be easier to buy some of that nylon strappy stuff, which if I hadnt been in such a hurry, I would have and the next time I make one of these, Im gonna do*
Decide how long and wide you want them to be, (I cut them 4 wide, and 44 long) and cut 2.  Fold them in longways, then fold the the edges to the middle (like bias tape). Then sew the ends together so that you have one piece.

4.Pin straps flat and stich. *Make sure that you pin the straps on evenly*Sew in zipper (look for zipper tutorial for help)

5. For the ends:
Sandwich and sew the round pieces the same way as the body.  Pin to the edges, right sides together and sew.  **When you sew the last end on, make sure you leave the zipper open enough to turn the bag out**

Voila!! Youre done!!

awesome. totally awesome.  Grin are you going to do a tutorial?

i buy the 80's ones off of ebay and from thrift stores all the time (they don't last very long--i should really make my own).

right now i have a blue one with tropical flowers and a tan one with dolphins. not real OPs but faux ones from the 80's.

i like yours better--better quality.

I'm so glad I saw this!  A bag that looks alot like this is at Target right now and I was just going to buy it.  Then I bought a bunch of zippers (10 for $1 at Hancocks Grin) and needed a crafty purse thingy to make me happy.  Thanks so much, it's adorable.

Hi,

I recently made a bag like this, well mine has shorter straps, but I made it following a pattern. I had the hardest time and I seriously think your tutorial makes more sense.
I think the worst part was making the handles cause the pattern pieces were not wide enough.

I'll try to post a picture of my bag, I made it with black denim and a very pretty and girly fabric for the lining, has lipsticks, combs, blow-dryers, etc, etc little drawings on it, hard to explain. The thing is the outside of the bag is super plain  Sad and I can't think of anything.. Im blocked lately.... it definitely needs some embellishment; maybe you guys can give me some ideas  Wink.

Anyhow, I'll post a pic later on today.

how about a little embroidery/patch of a lipstick or one of the other little things featured in the lining.  Maybe even a button of one?

i just wanted to thank you again because with a minor alteration your bag has saved me $68+ shipping.  i have wanted a knitone bag for a while now. if you hadn't posted the tutorial for your bag, i prolly would have eventually broken down and bought one of theirs (which i can't afford!). thanks. :0)

Wow!  That's really cute!  And great tutorial too!  You could probably make it smaller by reducing the size of the pattern.  Small, little round duffel purses - that would be really cute!! Smiley

Beautiful, adorable duffle!  I was just wondering if you could make a canteen-shaped bag using this tute.  Instead of a long cylinder, make a 3-4" one-- more like a gusset.  The strap could be just a single strap.  Hmm..., but the zipper would have to be on top of the bag.  Do you think this would be possible?

Supernice bag!

When you pin the round sides to the "body" of the bag, do you do it in some special way or do you just pin it? I made a pouch-purse with a  round bottom and foung it quite tricky to pin the bottom to the "cylinder" (it took ca 30 minutes...) so I'm in desperate need of some pointers.
