I tried it before and it didn't work for me. Yours look great.

I tried a few times today and failed and finally found the magic temperature.

It's 500 degrees for 20 minutes  - I did them on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper and just slid them into an ice water bath right off the cookie sheet and it worked like a charm.

I tried 350, 375 and 400 with no luck. Trying to heat them multiple times just resulted in breaks. 500 did the trick!

Thanks for a beautiful idea!! I love these so much. I'll bake the rest of the two pound bag tomorrow - LOL!!

PS - mine are floral marbles from Hobby Lobby - the flat backed kind.

Ahhhh, back to the future!! These were extremely popular back in the late 50s and early 50s. I remember making tons of necklaces for my friends and myself. We boiled the marbles then covered them with ice. What fun!

It worked! These clear marbles came with beads I got at an estate sale. So, they were basically free and I didn't care if they got ruined.

I wondered, then, after they were shattered, if the cracks could pick up color. So I rolled them around in food coloring, and HEY LOOK! It worked!



Thanks for the great idea!!! I bet the color would be more brilliant if I'd let them sit longer, but this is after about two minutes. I didn't want the food coloring to dry and require scrubbing.
