This is the cupcake I made for my 12 year old to pass to his friends on his birthday on October 13th.  It was a HUGE hit, even to the point that his art teacher took photos of it and 2 girls in his class refused to touch the brain.

They taste really good, despite the way they look.  They are made of red velvet cake mix, cream cheese frosting and the brains are made of chocolate using a miniature brain candy mold.  Super simple to make if you can find the mold.  I found mine on eBay but I know they're sold elsewhere online (with outrageous shipping prices, IMO).  The chocolates can be found in any cake decorating section of craft stores (Michael's, JoAnn, etc.), the cake mix and frosting can be made from scratch or purchased at any grocery store.

Aren't they awesome?Huh

**note:  the photos I took of my creation were deleted from my camera when my husband tried to download them, so the photos shown here belong to Flickr user xsomnis.  She has given permission to use them as long as I gave her credit for them.  Check out her Flickr photo stream, she does amazing art!

Cool cupcakes! Now I want to make them if DD's friends come over the day before Halloween.  Wonder if the local baking supply place has brain chocolate molds...

oh that is DISGUSTING! I LOVE IT!! I have a zombie obsession, so now i have to look for brain molds so I can pass out cupcakes like this to my friends on Halloween (I live an obscene distance away from basically everyone I love so I've got to make my visit special)

As opposed to a revolver, I use a sharpened pencil to displace my brains. I gently squeeze the trigger and splatter the page with metaphor
