pretty summer tank top

So, with a combination of a free brazilian bikini pattern (http://web.archive.org/web/20041010020436/http://www.crochetpartners.com/Patterns/CPpat120.html) and the the crossed-bar stitch (http://www.obgidge.com/lesson14.html), I made my first summer top:



Just below the bikini part, I did single crochet for six rows, then switched to the crossed-bar stitch.  Every six rows or so, I increased hook size (2, 3, 4, 4.5, 5, 5.5, 6, 7) so that the pattern stayed the same but the shirt size increased to accomodate the belly and hips.  Also, I changed the bikini pattern from a halter top to have regular straps, which I did by doing a slip stitch into the top of the cup, then chaining 75, attaching to the back with two slip stitches, and then 75 sc and another slip stitch into the top of the cup.

I think the yarn was a bit thick for the bikini part.  I tried using a smaller hook to try to get the holes to be smaller (and less risqué), but the holes stayed the same size because the yarn is thick enough that it pushed them apart.  A lot of them are based on doing 6 or 7 dcs into a chain, so it gets pushed apart by all the dcs.  Next time I'll use a thinner yarn.  As it stands, I'm on the verge of checking for nipple-pop-out every few minutes.   

Oh, and I got the yarn from an extra-large sweater that I bought for 12 bucks at Value Villlage and frogged.  I've still got 3/4s of the yarn leftover.

oh and for the nipple popping out... you could always line the cups with something light!!

One thing you could try is lining the cups with a contrasting fabric, like purple. That might look neat. Or, alternately, you could use fingering (that's what you call really thin yarn, right?) to crochet two liners for the cups.

That is stunning. That is one of the few crochet projects I've seen that I really love. If the projects in the upcoming Voulez Vous Crochet are anything like this, I'll be a happy girl.
