hi craftster! i've missed you!!

i did this piece back in may, for a swap, and realized the other day that i never got around to posting it here!

the theme of the swap was anatomy, and since the person i sent to was a mother (and it was right around mother's day!), i decided to do a piece that showed the anatomy of a pregnant woman. i google image searched and found an image that was detailed enough to make it worthwhile. i traced the image onto some light pink kona cotton using a washaway marker, and picked out 4 different shades of pink/burgundy to embroider with.

this was the final result -

i LOVE how it turned out!

after i finished the embroidery, i cut it to size and cut a piece of quilt batting that matched. i used sewtakeahike's awesome rose tutorial to create fabric roses in the corners, using strips of jersey knit. i played around with them a bit first, and was very thankful that i did - my first attempts were not pretty at all! my biggest problem is that i'm a perfectionist, so i was all concentrating on perfect folds and stuff, and i kept ending up with square roses. eventually i started going with the flow a bit more, and they turned out really cute. i played around a bit with the measurements she gives. the big roses are 3/4", but i think the strip was shorter, and the small roses were 1/2" strips, and again shorter.

some more pics -
http://
after rinsing, before pressing, obviously!

closeups of the roses

i backed the embroidery and batting with a bright pink kona, and wrote the title and date on the back. (i signed it too, but i've blurred that out...) i added a hanging sleeve at the top before i sewed the binding on, and then handstitched it and the binding down.

i hope you like it! the recipient totally did, and so did i! (the pictures are on flickr, so if you click them, you can go through and see them bigger if you'd like)

Ooh that's so neat! I love it, what kind of stitches are around the baby? I love seeing needlework made into a completed project. And thanks for the link to the roses tute, those look fun! Grin

This is simply adorable! I want one for myself too Cheesy The idea is genious. However, I'd rather leave well alone the roses, but it's only me.

Thumbs up for the anatomy of motherhood!!!!

thanks everyone!

the entire piece is stitched in backstitch. i usually try to have more varietyin each piece, but since the lines were so close together, it needed to be simple, and i didn't want to take away from the image itself.

i'm sure i was also inspired by all the mods who have been preggo in the last few years as well! and of course, the fact that taloola is studying to be a midwife - i've already promised her one for her "office" once she's done her practicum!

i think it could have done without the roses as well, but i don't think they look bad, either. i'd just seen the tutorial, and really wanted the excuse to try it, and i wanted to add a bit of dimension and texture to the finished piece, so roses it was. i originally intended to do roses all around the edge, but they turned out bigger than i'd expected!

Oh my wow! This is amazing! I love the idea! It reminds me of when my DH and I went to see a Body Worlds exhibit while I was pregnant. My friends thought it was kinda morbid, but I LOVED seeing the section where there were preserved fetuses from every stage of pregnancy. It was amazing to see exactly how big my baby was at that moment and what she really looked like curled up inside me. It made me feel so close to her. This piece reminds me of that special moment. I think it's a wonderful gift for a mama. Smiley

Just for reference, how big is this piece??
