I made this book bag for my mum's birthday.

I'm only just starting to sew and do patchwork.  I'd welcome any comments or advise.

Thanks for looking

I think you did an awesome job for your 1st time doing patchwork - I know your mum will love it. The only thing I think the bag needs is topstitching at the edge of the flap. I can't see the inside edge of the bag, but that should be topstitched as well. Straps need topstitching too. How does the bag stay closed? I think a nice button on the front would be pretty or if you have a snap under the flap, how about a nice pin? These little things really make a bag & add to their beauty.

Thank you.

What do you mean by topstitching?  I didnt put a fastener on, as i wasnt sure it would work if she put a thick book in it.

Topstitching is where you stitch 1/8" away from the edges of your bag - you are stitching on top of the finished bag or garment. Bags have them & even your clothes have them. Most topstitching thread is the same color as the fabric, but I like to use contrasting thread for added interest. It looks like this:

See all the white stitching on the edges? That's topstitching. It really finishes your bag. Also, most quilters, when they do patchwork like you do, they also topstitch each patch they sew. It's usually done at the end after you sew all the patches on & before you put the bag together. Take a look at other bags & patchwork quilts. Try it next time.
