I've been baking cupcakes for a while now and decorating them is my favorite part. I received the book Hello Cupcake for Christmas last year and I've been having a great time replicating their really cute ideas. Some of these ideas are from the book and some are others I've come across or thought up.

i'm student teaching right now and we watched caterpillars become butterflies in the classroom. The day after we released the butterfly, I brought these in for the class.

I've seen the hamburger cakes, but wanted to try my hand at hamburger cupcakes. I've made these twice now, this was my first attempt. The second time I made them the lettuce looked more leafy instead of strategically placed like this one.

These were my firework cupcakes for a 4th of July BBQ, which were a huge hit.

The sunflower cupcakes were also a big hit. I've made these twice now as well. Usually I don't like to repeat designs, but some come "back by popular demand". I ran out of red M&Ms to make ladybugs and the ones without looked plain so I made bumblebees out of the yellow ones.

Valentine's Day cookies after I found a recipe for the best cookie icing ever

and a select few up close

I've made a lot of other designs of cupcakes and cookies too, but it didn't occur to me to start taking pictures until my best friend moved to Boston and insisted I send her pictures of everything I make. Hopefully there will be more to come soon! (I have a few Halloween ideas brewing)

Your cupcakes look great.  I wouldn't mind having that icing recipe as well.

My mother's birthday is on July 4th.  She would love those fireworks cupcakes.

This is the recipe for the cookie icing I used. The cupcake icing is just canned vanilla icing tinted to whatever color I need.

Ingredients
6 oz (3/4 cup) of warm water
5 Tablespoons meringue powder
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
2.25 lbs of powdered icing sugar

Instructions
In mixer bowl, pour in the warm water and the meringue powder. Mix it with a whisk by hand until it is frothy and thickened…about 30 seconds. (meringue powder isn't the best smelling stuff, so don't be alarmed if it doesn't smell that great at this point. It gets better!)

Add the cream of tartar and mix for 30 seconds more.

Pour in all the powdered sugar at once and place the bowl on the mixer.

Using the paddle attachment on the LOWEST speed, mix slowly for a full 10 minutes. Icing will get thick and creamy.

Cover the bowl with a dampened tea-towel to prevent crusting and drying.

Tint with food colourings or thin the icing with small amounts of warm water to reach the desired consistency.

This recipe makes a lot of icing, but it keeps well and I've used it 2 or 3 weeks after I originally made it. I just throw it back in the mixer and mix it up a little again.  I thin it out with more water than they call for until it's almost like an Elmer's glue consistancy. It turns out really smooth and hardens pretty quickly. I hate the taste of royal icing and buttercream, so this is the perfect solution. Good luck!

My little cousin got that book for her birthday and  I was floored by all the intricate looking cupcakes. The monarchs were my faves and I'm happy to see how well they turned out for you! Now I think I will buy the book for myself after all. I'm feeling inspired to do the snowglobe cupcakes for my church bake sale in December.
