The barrel of the gun was made from woven straws.   An led tea light is used for the ray gun works.   The light is breath activated. So there is a straw in the front to blow the gun on and off.   The rest of the parts come from recycled soda plastic that was colored with sharpies.   Bits of copper wire, some glue and fishing line where used to connect everything together.

I made some goggles and necklace to match, but they have no straw parts to them.

The purple one below was a proto type.

What a brilliant and unusual idea! I love the look of the woven straws, and the light is very clever.

I love your ray gun!  It's such an unusual idea.  The woven straws are too neat and the breath activated tea light is amazing.  Great job!

Very neat idea! I second (third/fourth) the never-would-have-thought-of-thats, but it looks great.

Honestly not sure of the thought process myself,  but I will try to go from a to z.

First I spent a week mumbling " What the beep beep am I going to do with drinking straws".  During that week I did random drinking straw searches.   I came across a woven box at http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3038/2930056077_1716153daf.jpg.   The light in my head went on and I thought, well I made place-mats in kindergarten only  a few years ago  Wink.   I can weave something.

So a big bag of straws later, sorted on the floor of my craft room.  I had planned on just making a simple round hanging flower vase for my cubicle at work.  That did get made also, it is just not a cool as a ray gun.   I also do a bunch of crafts with old soda bottles.  So on the floor also was tops and bits of soda bottles.  A top  reminded me of ray gun nozzle all of a sudden.  Suddenly it hit me that my round tube shaped vase could be the barrel.  and the rest is history.

I will see about recreating some in production pictures this weekend.  The straws do weave well and I imagine someone who actually did basket weaving could do some neat stuff.   Especially if they could figure out a way to cut them neatly down the length of the straw so they would take corners well.  Just too thick otherwise.  I tried to do a star base weave but it came out more crude than those old place mats did.
