I want to make a hat with a band logo on it like April Draven's, but I hate the little dots of previous row that occur on the sides like this

Is there a trick to keep this from happening or what?

Picture is a sample I was doing to test my chart. I'm working in rounds.

I'm not sure if I'm helping or not, but yesterday I was looking at some videos about tapestry crochet.

In tapestry crochet, they switch color with two loops on the hook, here's the best video to show what I'm talking about, maybe it might help.

In tapestry crochet, they switch color with two loops on the hook,

Actually, with *all* crochet you switch colours mid-row with two loops on the hook, unless you specifically want the dotted look mentioned above.  The reason for this is that that last loop you pull through when you make a stitch is actually the top of the next stitch.
