I agree on the narrowing it down to just a few problem! My family has an heirloom copy of one of the original English translations of Grimm's Fairytales, so I grew up on some of the more obscure ones.

And I think the Secret Garden would be cool! Alice in Wonderland's not really  a fairy tale.

Bah! I totally think that Alice in Wonderland is a fairy tale. It's on the list with Labyrinth, Legend, Wizard of Oz, Princess Mononoke, Pan's Labyrinth and any modern day brilliance that long ago would have been told in front of roaring fireplaces.

Besides, to me a fairy tale is any story of whimsy, where heroes and heroines face some times magical, sometimes terrifying challenges. They win, they lose but ultimately we are drawn into their world, and are forever changed.

I know it is so hard to narrow it down there are soo many fairy tales. But I do have to say my 2 faves are little red and the 7 swans. Little red is just filled with sexual connotations so of course I would love that and the 7 swans is just awsome. But there are so many that are great....

Lol, hi inaura!
And I think a lesbian retelling of rapunzel would b awesome. She could be rescued by a brave, intelligent, and beautiful princess, instead of a prince and start a matriarchy together Smiley

My thoughts exactly. While I am not a lesbian myself I always thought that gay couples were so much more romantic than heterosexual couples... (I might be am propably am definitely biased though)

Totally. Out of interest has any of you read the picture book, written by Shannon Hale (can't remember the artist) retelling the story of repunzel. Its got a very kick ass heroine who uses her long hair as a lassoo...the prince comes in as he shoots the beast shes manged to get to carry her and then immediately assumes she is grateful for saving her....thats the last we see of any princes in that book (incidently she ends up falling for a thief). That said just go and read any shannon Hale....she has such fresh and interesting retelling of stories, the main one being of goose girl...none of the characters sit around waiting for prince charming let me tell you....i'd love a lesbien 'punzie' anyway!

Still trying to think of stories - to be honest I don't actual know that many but still....

Well, a few years ago here the local performing arts center put on a children's musical where the princes were the dopey ones and Rapunzel decided what she really wanted to do was become a narrator. It was called "The Three Prince Charmings."

But my personal favorites have always been the 12 dancing princesses (what rebels they were! lol) and Princess Furball.

But then, if we are including more modern retellings and such, have any of you read "The Ordinary Princess" by M. M. Kaye? It was one of my favorite childhood books.
