I've kissed alot of frogs - only found 1 prince

I have about 5 minutes before I have to leave to pick up the kids from school but wanted to get this up before I go, just finished it and I'm real pleased (I'd posted last night for opinions on coloring the octopus)

So just to update a little - it's made with crayola model magic and the only 'tool' I used is a toothpick.  It took about 30 hours in total to make.

more details and images on my blog - http://cohesivechaos.com/2009/09/octopus-lamp/

Opinions greatly appreciated!

Love it. Love it. Love it.

I'm not a big octopus, underwater, sea person but this totally rocks. It's all sorts of amazing.

Beautifully done.

Thank you Smiley The most impressive thing is probably the materials lol.  It's made from crayola model magic. I love that stuff it's so fun to work with (but I've also been working with it since it came out in the early 90's)

You are a goddess, this is amazing. It actually looks like the entire thing is underwater, not to mention it being extremely realistic. I can't believe that you did this with model magic! I hope you have some 'in progress shots on your blog.'

yeah I'm working on getting some in progress shots up I've been trying to get in the practice of taking lots of photos as I work to make it a 'habit' rather than an afterthought.  The only other thing I used aside from my hands to sculpt it was a toothpick. Now I need to work out what to do with the remaining clay in the bag I opened so I don't waste it Smiley

This is really stunning and beautiful. I am inpressed with kids you could find 30 hours! It's all the more impressive that it's done with model magic.

I just took a look at the blog and I have to say, seeing in white and really seeing how much talent went into the sculpting is almost as beautiful as seeing the finished piece. Truly amazing, 'specially considering it was done with your hands, mind and a tooth pick!

Wow this is beautiful.....If you can't find a place for it in your house, I would volunteer to re-home it!  Wink As for using up the remaining clay...does it have/need a finial?

You all are really making me blush.  GatbysRevolver - it was painted after it dried but all the sculpting was done with crayola model magic Smiley  There are 'process' photos in the blog link I just tried to not be too superfluous with images here Smiley

It looks like it was painted with watercolours - but what type of paint did you use?  Shocked

I LOVE this guy! I like octopuses I like underwatery stuff... I love the colors! I can't get the link to your blog to work (I'm kinda late finding this thread!) but I love this. I could be friends with him.

I take it the shiny black thing that looks like an eye is actually a lightbulb, yes? I'd like to see this "in action," although pictures of lights are, um, Hard. :}  I can't get my head around this being a lamp, I guess. I'm so distracted by the awesome of the sculpting. I know nothing of the material, but when the sculpture is this good, frankly, who CARES how it was made??  Grin  I know no matter what I used, unless I used some coral, some rocks, and an actual octopus, I would never be able to do this. And even then I wouldn't get the colors right!

I vote against a lampshade unless you need to shield tiny minds from the onslaught of awesome, but even then I'd push for just letting them explode. This guy should not be hidden. And if your house doesn't go with him, then it's time to redo your house.

He's just SO GOOD!  I need to go stare at him some more. And wist him. And generally covet.
