A friend came to my home and saw this scale in my guest bath. She then commissioned me to make one for her daughter in law who has been dealing with an eating disorder for the last 10 years. The only thing I asked before designing it was her favorite color, and that is purple.

Here is the project complete:

Bottom

Feet:

Here are the in process images:

She will come pick up tomorrow, and I can't wait to see her reaction.

Thanks for checking it out, and all comments & questions welcomed!  Smiley

this is similar to a project I did in third grade (a gillion years ago) I made a scale out of 2 pieces of wood with 4 springs sandwiched in between. I colored it with crayons or something (not NEARLY as cool as mosaic!) and the display read "perfect" -mind you I was 8, so we all know my issues go way back!- I'm so happy I saw this today, it looks wonderful.

I'm glad that you are mosaicing again.  This is a pretty awesome project, and I agree that you should sell them.

Nice work, both of them.

That is a great story! Unfortunately I think most girls have issue with their weight, from very young ages. It is one of the saddest things about our societies obsession with "appearance".

The "PERFECT" is printed out on a digital font, glued to the sybstrate, and then a clear glass piece glued on top.

Wow such a beautiful project with a beautiful message.  I have always sworn that I will never own a scale, but I would break that promise for one like this, because I know I wouldn't obsess over what's on the display.

Oh my goodness! This is well "Perfect" haha (yes I know I'm cheesy) I'm going to bookmark this and keep it in mind. I have a friend that has struggled on and off with an eating disorder for years now. I think this would be the perfect pick me up should she ever need it (I really hope she won't though)

I'm sure this isn't relevant to this situation, since the girl's mother asked you to create it, but I beg everyone who considered/will consider making a similar gift:

Any focus on an ED sufferer's weight can, and likely will, trigger. ESPECIALLY when it's an outsider, EVEN if they're telling me nice things. Because you're still focused on it, I'm fixated on it, and in some cases, if I'm being told I'm perfect when I'm at my worst, I could clearly only be more perfect if I'm more emaciated.

YMMV but I would hate to see such a sweet thought backfire.

I do not struggle with an eating disorder nor do I have any loved ones who do, but I wouldn't mind having that in my bathroom at all!  It's taking something that makes you think less of yourself and turning it into something beautiful that reminds you that you are beautiful as well!
And thank you for your comment, rinkin.  It would indeed be a shame to see such a sweet thought backfire.
