I made a new dress.  Its another part of my sister's birthday present.  She sent me this material a few years ago but I was always afraid to cut into it for fear it would be wasted.  Well I finally just shirred up a simple tube dress so there it is.  Tell me what you think.

There were three coordinating fabrics that she had sent- the plain violet, the blue almost sheer that makes up the body of the dress, and the beaded and sequined violet and blue.  I used the sequined stuff to make a wrap.

me, not at all photogenic

the hem

In progress shots:

I started it on Tuesday, and finished it up today (saturday)  The beading took a very long time because I have poor manual dexterity and dropped/spilled/broke more beads than I sewed on.  The lotus itself is detachable and has snaps, and I guess it could be worn as an insanely large necklace.  Anyhow, tell me what you think.  After all of the work, my favourite part is the wrap, which took about 20 minutes to make.  Roll Eyes

OMG that fabric is beautiful!  I can see why you'd be scared to cut into it.  I'm super jealous of your sister, now.

thank you everyone.  The blue is her absolute favourite color- most of what she wears is some shade close to it.   I'm sending it off tomorrow <3  I hope she likes it as much as you guys do.  Even so it was worth it to make something pretty like that, and I would never wear something so fancy.

The material that you used for the dress is fantastic. And the lotus brings it to any entirely different level! Very cool stuff.

How did you do that lotus? Wonderful work, looks so pretty on and the wrap makes it just that much better. Very, very nice, and it looks great on you too! You're so cute and look so lovely in it, don't say you won't ever wear anything so fancy, you could Totally pull that off!

Everything about that dress is so beautiful: the colors, the fabrics, the lotus and the beading. I can't imagine that your sister won't absolutely LOVE it! And if she doesn't, I'm sure you'd have many takers for it!

thank you everyone!  I think she will like it, because the lotus has a special significance for us, sorta.

It started at Burning Man in 2002, when I painted this lotus on our friend:

My sister loved it so much that she asked me to draw one for her, for her tattoo for her birthday.

She really likes the sort of lotus that I draw, and so i make lots of thing with lotus motif.

So I'm pretty sure she'll like it- I just hope its not too 'old lady-ey', with all the sparkling.

Stunning!

Any tips on measuring up tube dresses?

I made one recently and it was too full and poofy at the bust?

Thanks!

Well, honestly I'm not really sure how big the material was but I can tell you that the stitch length makes all the difference when you're shirring on the machine.  If you want it to be loose/bigger then you set it to 2.5 stitchlength or thereabouts.  For much, much tighter you have to use the longest stitches of all, on my machine is 5.  I use shirring on my daughter's clothing a lot, and I almost always use the 4.  I used the 2.5 on this at first and it was HUGE.  After sewing it together with french seams and making 5 or 6 lines of stitching that were with the "4" setting it was better fitting- but still hopefully able to fit on my sister, who is very busty.  UPS says the package is being delivered today and i am biting my nails in anticipation of her receiving it and all.

I am curious WHAT the lotus is made of? Part of me thinks its felt but the more purply layer almost looks like craft foam.

Thank you, everyone!  in response to what the lotus is made of, they are neither foam nor felt.  Here is a picture of the templates I made:

The larger one, with three petals, is made of microsuede, which I had bought about 4 years ago.  It was just a remnant, about 4' long but only 11 inches wide.  I fused interfacing to the back and cut out 2 of the larger flower shapes, and one of the smaller.  The darker purple was a rayon blend that my sister had sent, I also used it for the lining of the wrap.  I cut out one of the smaller flower shapes, and stitched it together with the matching microsuede piece.  Then I sewed the darker purple piece onto the lighter one and started to bead.  After it was all beaded it was HEAVY, too heavy for the fabric to lay flat when worn, even with all the interfacing, so I glued a piece of extra stiff interfacing onto the back, with e6000, thus covering up all the bead stitches.  The neckpiece/choker thing is also the microsuede- its so very soft.
