I have a friend who is having a big 1st b-day party for her daughter in November.  I'd like to make her a hat and mittens.  Problem is, I don't know how big a one year old's head is.  How do I know it will fit without sneaking over there and putting it on her?  I can't just make it extra stretchy cuz I have no idea how!  Everything I make is rather minimal in the stretchy department.

I'm thinking I'll make a hat similar to this one http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=297851.0.  I'll have to find a pattern for mittens, but again, how do I know how big to make them?

I've never made anything but scarves for someone else, not sure how to make sure of the fit.  Any help is greatly appreciated!

Just because someone doesn't love you the way you want them to,
doesn't mean they don't love you with all they have.
