Oooh!  A blacksmith!  My dad and brother started a 4-H blacksmithing club/project in their county.  Wish we had it when I was a kid!  Dad taught my 8 yr old to blacksmith last fall.  It's so cool!

I assume that you're going for the standard 3 or 4 ply rope.

Considering the materials you're working with I'd suggest a power drill, tree, jute twine, and some time. I've made rope before using just those things. I worked in 20-30 foot segments, twisting one segment at a time and staking it in the ground. Rather than a fancy tool to keep the strands separated I used sticks hammered in the ground. Took awhile and some time to get the knack for it, but it can be done.

Oh, and if you're after the low tech/traditional method you can make yourself a club.
Take a look here.

Also a carpenter, tool maker, occasional weaver, and all round busy body.
If needed I can do a quick tutorial on how to do this with some jute twine if you need a visual explanation.

Not much I don't do when the whim strikes me, I had to move recently so most of my tools are in storage while I build a new workshop. Right now I'm busy facing the stone for the footers and logging and milling the timber for the frame of the structure, fortunately for me I managed to get my last two projects for swaps completed earlier this week, just need to get to the post office to send them off.
