I had a sad little office chair and needed to integrate it into my guest room/craft room. since I've gotten into steampunk of late I went with that and the finished product is here:

I used an old velvet shirt to cover the chair and then painted the overly shiny chrome an antique gold with acrylics.

How do you keep the acrylic from chipping/separating from the chrome and base?

I made sure the chrome was really clean and dry, then sponged everything on really thin. it took several coats, then topped the whole thing in poly.  Haven't had a problem with the paint trying to chip off the chrome yet.
