Pride and Prejudice?! That's like a swap trump card for me! It is a hair's breadth ahead of the rest of Austen's ouvre and Jane Eyre as my favorite book of all time!

Which basically means I have to be in this swap Smiley

Awww ladies!  If this were at any other time, I'd be signed up already.  P&P is my favortie.  (Or maybe it's just that I'm a little in love with Mr. Darcy...)  But I'm signed up for the 12 Days of Christmas swap, which includes 78 items, and I'm crafting EVERY holiday gift this year, so I shouldn't get in over my head.  But if you do a round 2 during something like January, I'm your girl!  Have fun and happy crafting!

What bliss! I have Mellybelly from Australia! (A place where Jane Austen's Aunt Leigh-Perrot may have been transported to, had her shoplifting trial gone sour. And I'm sending from Washington, DC, a place that some of Jane Austen's dancing partners burned to cinders in the War of 1812. Fate, really Grin  Or just proof that Austen is Everywhere.)

MORE news of the eternal Austen: the October 2009 issue of Vogue magazine has 6 whole pages on Long Sleeves.

Right on the cover:
"FALL'S FINISHING TOUCHES
Over-the-Knee Boots
Over-the-Top Nails
Lots of Hats!
PLUS why your dress needs long sleeves"

Take out the nails, and that's pretty much the wardrobe for every production of P&P, as it was and ever shall be, world without end, amen.

Hehe, when I was knitting an Edward Cullen doll for a former partner, I watched the movie a couple times, then succumbed to the inevitable and bought all the twilight books in audio book format (my credit cards are still sobbing).  That way I could enjoy the books and craft at the same time. I'm on the lookout for a good P&P audiobook, now.
Ooh, and I read a fun book, today.  It's called "Pride & Prejudice & Jasmine Field"  It's about a group of people working on a charity stage production of P&P.  I really enjoyed it.   Grin

Just finished a... medium? big? Anyway, it's blue and pretty.  And it doesn't weigh much.

BTW, the best P&P audiobook is narrated by Flo Gibson. "Recorded Books" is the company. IMHO.

AND my package is on the way to what Miss Austen would call "the antipodes". One of my best, IMHO. Must be the inspiration!

Me again.

I'm sending a copy of P&P to my niece in Florida for her 16th birthday. I actually BOUGHT one, because it had the Hugh Thomson illustrations. Pretty, and training wheels.

If she doesn't like it, I shall have to disinherit her. But how can she resist Elizabeth Bennet--the original smart-ass grrrl?

BTW, I think the WORST thing that can happen to Austen is to make her assigned reading in high schools.
1. Personally, I always hated assigned books, on principle. (THERE's an example of pride and prejudice at work.)
2. All that sex and money? Totally for adults.  Grin

How old were y'all when you first read P&P? I was 14. I didn't get the jokes until I was 25 or so.

I was one of the rare children who was discouraged from reading, so as soon as I moved out I started devouring books!

I first read it at 17 in my Brit Lit class, but I'd already seen the A & E presentation a billion and one times, so there were very few surprises for me by then.  It disturbed me that they flipped Darcy's letter around for the movie, though I understand why, presentation wise, but the way they did it in the movie was far more likely to leave Lizzy thinking ill of him, ending in such a negative way, and all.
I learned an interesting tidbit about British history. The government realised it wasn't making that much money in taxes by raising the tax on tea, since everyone, including the government officials who approved such taxes, was buying their tea on the black market.  They then decided to tax people on the number of windows they had in their houses.  The rich responded by having fewer, larger windows installed, and the poor responded by blocking up their windows.  When I heard this it made me think of this:
"Every park has its beauty and its prospects; and Elizabeth saw much to be pleased with, though she could not be in such raptures as Mr. Collins expected the scene to inspire, and was but slightly affected by his enumeration of the windows in front of the house, and his relation of what the glazing altogether had originally cost Sir Lewis de Bourgh."
Basically, what Mr. Collins is bragging about here is his patronesses ability to pay taxes for so many windows.  It put it into an interesting perspective for me.

Fascinating!
Bet you Lady CdeB cheated on her taxes.

Also, in the late 18th-early 19th century, the technology/technique for making large panes of glass was greatly improved, so big new windows were a terrific status symbol. Mr Collins is also bragging about how high-tech Rosings is.

HEY EVERYBODY!
Sorry I've been absent as of lately. If you are going to send late you need to PM me & your partner. Let us know how the crafting's coming! I've only heard from 1/2 of Knit_core, Adaa, and my self. We only have 1 sender so far, right?

I think its great to have great books given as high school assignments, or else I would have never read On the Road, the Tao of Pooh & many others! Actually I hadn't read Pride & prejudice till a few years ago.(Who went to a hippie school? I DID!) But I had always adored the 95' version, and pleased by other incarnations. I think that's one of the things I really love about the story, how it can change but still in essence have the core .
