I have been eyeing out some bamboo placemats for a whilst now - but unfortunately they carried an unreasonable price tag (when the cost of materials are taken into account) so I decided to make my own!

I purchased the packet of bamboo skewers and the rope and the green silky-like thread from the dollar-store.

I then proceeded by basically 'weaving' the bamboo skewers together using the rope and the thread. I sealed the ends with some wood glue and ... Voila! A set of 4 placemats ready for use!

I wish I made those... how did you keep all the skewers steady? did you use tape to get started. And you made a whole set?
This actually looks like it took a lot of time and patience! Great Job!

It did take some time I must admit, but once I got the hang of it I quite enjoyed it! Starting off wasn't that difficult - I just basically added a skewer each time after giving the rope a twist. This held the skewers in place. After doing the first row I placed the skewers on a table with the edges laying over the edge. This made it easier to 'weave'.

For your doll house, you could use toothpicks. Cool

I love these! They're something I would actually make, use and admit I made.

Did you snip off the points to make them all even? What did you use to do that?

This is a really neat project. You got my vote!!!

I'd love to see you work the entire directions (including the weaving steps) into an Instructable!

Anne.

Those look great!! I've seen the bamboo placemats for sale everywhere, but I agree with the "too high" price tag. These look as good as any others, but pure DIY dollar materials. I love them.

this would be a good personilized gift, or something to make for your self.  and it wouldn't be all that hard... just find the right color to match the decor/plates...  brilliant!

I was just at Target and they had a table runner made just like this! The bamboo pieces were wider, but otherwise, it was woven in the same way. It was in a color that would have coordinated with you placemats very nicely!

Now that I know I can make my own, I see a bamboo skewer table runner in my future Wink With matching placemats, of course Cheesy
