Fancy Five Dollar Fabric Pinecones

This is my first posting on craftster and my first challenge. A long...long...long time ago I saw this idea in a Christmas ornament. I made a few hundred for friends and family out of plaid taffeta, straight pins, and foam eggs. They were gorgeous. I hadn't thought about them in 20 years, but while in the kitchen aisle at 99cent Only store, I was inspired by these beautiful pillow covers. If you are at all crafty (which, if you're here, I'm supposing you are!), I think you can figure out how I made them without me posting step-by-step instructions. It's just a lot of triangles of fabric, the "egg" form, made from measuring cups in this case, and hot glue. Oh, and many, many hot glue burns, of course.

My 99cent Only Shopping list: Four pillow slip covers (I only used 3 though), 2 sets of measuring cups, and two rolls of raffia.


Cut off the handles of the measuring cups, glue together like an egg. Cut fabric into rectangles about 2 x 3", fold into triangles. Start at what will be the bottom of the pinecone and glue around, layering as you move toward the top. Finish the top with some ribbon to hang.


Close up of the big daddy...this one is two 1 cup measuring cups put together.


The green one looks sort of like an artichoke...a shiny, sequined artichoke.


Not bad for about $7.00!

Ooooh!  I like this!  Neat idea!  The green one totally looks like an artichoke, but it still looks awesome!  The black one has me mesmerized by its layers!

These decorations look great. I would have never thought of creating something like this with measuring cups, very clever!

These are beautiful.  I love the green one best- it does look like an artichoke, that is exactly why it is the best.
