Do you have a bundle of drinking straws tucked away in the back of a kitchen drawer?  Maybe you have just one lonesome straw leftover from a fast food adventure or juice box.  Whatever the case, your challenge this month is to craft one or more drinking straws into a fabulous and perhaps unexpected project.

A quick glance through the drinking straw tag might yield a little inspiration for you!  Oh, and look at these gems found via Google:  pendant lamp, flower stems, flexible lamp, lapel pin, jewelry, bird carving and mobiles.

Feel free to use traditional craft supplies glue, thread, etc. and even additional components in the project, but be sure to somehow feature the drinking straw(s).

Rules:

• Post your craft during the period of Oct 1 - Oct 5 2009. No sooner.  No later.  On Oct 1 there will be a special folder created for entries.
• Voting will happen from Oct 6 - Oct 12 2009.
• Each participant can enter ONE project (Although your entry can have multiple components to it).

Originality:

It's probably impossible to know whether your project is 100% original and has never been posted on Craftster or made by anyone else in the past.  But if your project was definitely inspired by something you've seen before, then just give credit to that project.

Prizes:

At the end, I'll set up a poll right here and the first place winner will get...

(1) their project in the Featured Projects area
(2) their project in the Craftster Blog

oh yay! I just love the crazy straws...they leave so much room for fun no matter what..hehe, we were using one this morning actually and that is why i thought to ask!...it was purple

Yay!  I might give this one a go.  I have a bunch of straws that I used to make paper leis for Lana's 1st Bday and since then they've been sitting there.  Time to think.  I just love these challenges!!!

lol.  This is perfect, because I actually BOUGHT some straws and stuff to use in the last challenge, but first few weeks of school+new job+new ferret+major procrastination+all kinds of other stuff kept me from entering... So, cool!

awesome! i think im gonna actually enter this one....but i do have 2 questions
1) can we use materials OTHER than straws?? (im not including glue/tape in this question)
2) does it need to serve a purpose? or can it just be a....decorational piece?

No problem at all!

1)  Yepper!  Feel free to use traditional craft supplies as well as other components.
2)  It does not need to serve a purpose.  It can be a decorative or art piece.

Use your best judgement with this one.  You want to make the straw(s) the feature one way or another.

i did manage to get one medium sized straw yarn (more details when entry is posted and please do not copy)
but i have no idea what to knit with it.. there isn't enough for a shawl
ideas?

i'm surprised i actually managed to get something.. the hardest of all the challenges and i chalk somethink up.

Has anyone managed to find clear straws? They seem to be non-existent here in Aus!
I've had to change my design because of it, but it'll be fine. Can't wait to post and see what everyone else has got!

usually they give you clear straws at RESTAURANTS (not fast food) when you order a coke or iced tea or something..

progress on mine... i decided to make it mini ... maybe an egg cosy (another kind of straw hat) or if it turns out big enough then the dogs noggin will be kept warm. until he eats it. my knitting hasn't been working out lately so i made a loom for knitting out of a box and my art kit!

GAH! I'm right in the middle of packing to move out of state -
Before we sold the house I had planned on making a 'beaded curtain' out of blue and green straws cut at various lengths to use as a bathroom curtain. It would let in light and air but block any peeping-toms. Oh well, maybe the new place will need curtains, but too late for this challenge...

wow i almost just donated several packages of straws to the goodwill.  logged onto craftster randomly after an absence, and i guess i won't donate them now!  i even have an idea, but i have to see if i can make it work.  i think it would be better sewed, but as i forgot to go get my sewing machine from where i lent it, i will maybe use duct tape.  anyway my idea is a very cheerful one!
