My daughter requested this for the Book Character Day at school. Bearing in mind I have NO sewing experience (well, unless sewing a button on counts), it was a bit of a...challenge, shall we say.

I so need to take more piccies next time...

Having an addiction to Bleach anyway (it's a Japanese anime series btw, I don't habitually sniff the stuff lol), I know vaguely what the shinigami outfit consisted of. The only bits I knew I couldn't make were the black hakama (trousers) since they are really complicated so I ended up buying those from eBay (4 including postage, bargain!).

The white keikogi, the black keikogi (the two tops), the sandals (known as waraji...and it took me AGES to find that out) and the sword (zan-paktu) were all made from scratch, as were the white panels under the black hakama (I didn't have time to make white hakama to go underneath them).

I kind of made the pattern up as I went along for the keikogi but it worked so well I might even end up doing a tut at one point. Feel free to comment, I'll be making another thread for my other daughter's costume, which was Boudicca.

Reference pic, this is Rukia Kuchiki.

The white keikogi:

The sword (called a zan-paktu in the anime):

The waraji (from an old grotty pair of sandals):

Oh, ignore the socks LOL

Finished article:

And one very chuffed daughter:

She didn't win because they thought I'd bought it. I don't know whether to be insulted or complimented. Cheesy

Thanks Seraphina. I'm still confused as to whether it was a good thing or not. Mind you, she didn't care because SHE knew it had been made by me. Cheesy

I think you should take it as compliment, because being able to make something that seems store bought is good!  your daughter looks so proud to be wearing it Smiley  Well done Mom!

You did a marvelous job! She looks just like Rukia ^_^ It sucks that she didn't win, but the reason why she didn't win must give you much confidence in your sewing skills Cheesy Always nice to see cosplays on here. Again, wonderful job, mum! xx

When you do things right, people won't be sure you've done anything at all.

Thanks! Cheesy

I'm actually surprised at just how much I enjoyed it. Problem now is that I have SO many projects I want to do...a yukata for each of my three girls, then I saw the hoodie tut someone did and want to make them one each, I'm making a Scottish Piper doll for my sis for xmas and might even end up making my mum a santa claus one too...

I'm surprised how addictive it is, especially since before this I could barely stitch a button on (well, I can cross-stitch and do blackwork but that was all) lol

This is just awesome!!! Your daughter(s) are so lucky to have you!
Have you seen Rukia zompakto's physical character,  Sode no Shirayuki?? Her outfit is amazing and would be a great counterpart.
I too am a huge Bleach addict...Cheesy

I loved this when I first saw it. Wondering if you were going to do the tutorial mentioned. My daughter wants one.
