I've seen books hollowed out to keep stuff in (I guess this is what you call a stash), but you can also use the hollow place as kind of a shrine or grotto type thing (since you're thinking of a Dune theme). A band saw works great for cutting the center portion of a bunch of pages at once and then you glue the loose edges of the interior of the pages (the cut edge) together with gorilla glue (it expands to catch all the pages). Band saws are great if you are REALLY careful, but then I'm dangerous with a craft knife in my hands.

Good luck!

An altered book based on Dune?
Or a hollowed-out book safe?
