Hey, i'm going to be in the netherlands for 2 weeks, with A LOT of free time. Mostly Amsterdam but also The Hague and Friesland areas. I was wondering if anyone could recommend any cool craft galleries or exhibitions or events that are running between 5th-20th sept? Its hard to find details online, seems to be the sort of thing you only know if you are local! Anyway...suggestions greatly appreciated!

Thanks xx

Not wanting to disappoint you, but craft is not a very much appreciated thing in the Netherlands and I don't know any craft galleries or Exhibitions. There's the textile museum in Tilburg (south Netherlands) and someone mentioned a craft fair on this site on the 20th of September on surinameplein in Amsterdam. Otherwise nothing I know of and I do keep an I out as I would like to go such places myself......
Hope you enjoy your stay in the Netherlands though.

There are a LOT of musea and galleries in Amsterdam and The Hague. But there are not many local crafts going on. There are not many original craft shops around unfortunately. Crafting doesn't seem to be very popular around here...

Looking for expositions and such, is kind of hard because a lot of these smaller expositions or musea only have a dutch website, so they probably don't have any English information provided.

What I did found is these links
http://home-and-garden.webshots.com/photo/1546264920081948022xAWjKW with some adresses in Amsterdam.

http://www.make-digital.com/craft/vol07/?pg=34

I found that there will be a craft fair in the Griftpark in Utrecht http://deutrechtsefabriek.hyves.nl/ on 5 and 6 september from 10 until 17 hours with about 50 crafty webshops. Beware that the majority are focussing at the kids market. Here are a few links of webshops who will be there http://www.mokka.nl/tassen-shop/ and http://www.phara.biz/producten.php

On the 13th there is also a fair of webshops, in Amsterdam. http://www.kleinkinderwarenhuis.nl/ Also this is maily focussed at children and their parents. It is even at a petting zoo  Cheesy

At the 6th of september there is a art market with about 70 stalls http://www.vvvdenbosch.nl/Evenementenkalender/September-2009/6-september-ArtiBosch/ in den Bosch. It is a lovely city and there also different festivals going on in the city. (Damn, that is in a few hours!!!)

If you have any trouble with google translator, feel free to PM me.

Have a good trip!

For Friesland: http://www.vvvleeuwarden.nl/pageid=9/Evenementen.html has a lot of events listed. The english option doesn't really work unfortunately. Hopefully you can translate it. http://www.princessehof.nl/2007/exhibitions.php?t=actueel#exh_43 these can be interessting expositions.

other link to Frysian museum http://www.friesmuseum.nl/?lan=English

The Hague toerist info with listings of expositions http://www2.holland.com/denhaag/gb/index.jsp

Also about the hague and festivals http://www.thehagueonline.com/arts_and_entertainment

Amsterdam info s usually easier to find, so i trust you to find that for yourself.

good links in english

Thanks so much singlalala for all your help! I wouldn't have found half this stuff on my own!

We went to the ceramics museum (princesshoff) in Leeuwarden which was perfect for me as i study ceramics! Also went to the graphics museum in Groningen and the DADA exhibit in Drachten was good. I was pretty impressed with the craft supplies in Leeuwarden...trust me, so much better than Wales!

Also, we found an amazing antiques/curiosity shop in Leeuwarden, its practically a museum! The gift shop of the ceramics museum had some great work by local crafts people for sale. But you're right, not much in the way of original craft shops.

We ended up staying away from Amsterdam most of the trip, Friesland is much nicer! We had a great time so thanks a lot for all the help!

I am glad you liked it!! Grin I find amsterdam very touristy, so I can imagine that Friesland feels much quieter and real compared to a'dam.

Hi there!  I see there aren't any recent posts on this question, but just in case you're looking: We do the handicraft thing at the ABC Treehouse (Voetboogstraat 11, just off the Spui) every Tuesday evening at 6pm. And we regularly host craft-related events; co-hosted the ABC Urban Art festival in June 2010, and are developing the July 2011 version.  Check the calendar soon for more info, or visit our website: www.treehouse.abc.nl. or look at the Crafty Me site on Facebook.
