Our mini-doxie, Opie, doesn't like his feet touching the floor - he prefers to be carried EVERYWHERE. We're always saying that we need a little backpack to carry him around in. I finally gave it a go today. I started out engineering something totally crazy - with straps and velcro and elastic but eventually I decided - "hey, I'll just sew a pocket to a t-shirt!".

So I made a big fleece lined pocket and sewed it to a matching t-shirt! I made a strap that attaches to the front of the pocket and then goes around your neck so the pocket doesn't fall forward. The fleece lining made it really bulky and hard to sew but it's nice and cozy so I guess it was worth it.

He LOVES the final product. He doesn't ever want to leave his pocket now and even sleeps in it! Ha!! Our Great Danes are soooo jealous. They want to be carried around too. Here are some pics...

Hmmm...the pocket looks a bit crooked in this one but it's just the way Opie's curled up in it

OMG, this is awesome!!!  My bf and I joke we need a backpack for our bulldog too because we like to walk places but he gets tired pretty quick.
I'll be making a ring sling for my pup for the MSPCA walk we're doing in September!!  This is GREAT!!!  Thanks for sharing!

my mini dachshund Zippy is getting one of these stat! I originally thought of something more like a baby sling, but he's too wiggly. T-shirt pocket ahoy!

That is adorable.  Opie looks like he is really loving it!  I will definitely need to consider this for my small dog for when I go on long walks that are too long for her.  Thanks for the idea.

Opie is adorable. I have a mini chocolate weiner dog named Peanut. She would love a little carrier like that. She was my baby before I started having kids and she has felt slighted sense I brought home other babies.  Smiley Peanut isn't quite as long as Opie though. She's only about a 7 pounder and is 9 years old. How old is your Opie?

Thanks for the nice comments! I'm totally enjoying watching my "I'm more of a big dog person" fiance walking around with Opie on his chest all day. I think he likes it just as much as Opie does!! I can't help but laugh whenever I look at them.

If any of you decide to make one please post pictures. It's just too funny not to share!!

How old is your Opie?

Peanut sounds adorable! I love chocolates. Opie is a year old now and just under 9 pounds.

And on another note:
Your danes are GORGEOUS! I want them!

Hey Thanks! They are incredible dogs.

UPDATE - As I was typing this my fiance walked in the room holding Opie's food bowl and feeding him his dinner while in his pocket! HA! Room service!!

CUTE! My sister has a maltese/dachshund mix who's about 6lbs and she would LOVE something like this. I think dachshunds are born cuddlers.

I did notice though, the other dogs seem to be wondering why they don't get carried. No playing favorites now, so get to work on a dane sling. Wink

There's an old Disney movie, I forget the name, where the wife has prize weiner dogs and the husband gets one great dane. It looks like you might have the opposite  Grin

Ha ha! YES - It's called "The Ugly Dachshund" and it's a really cute movie - especially if you have doxies and danes like we do.

The doxies in the movie are always causing trouble but the dane is the one that gets blamed for it. That's totally the way things work in our house! Opie pulled about 20 skeins of yarn out of a knitting basket the other day...our older dane got completely tangled in it and she was the one that really got busted...caught red pawed so to speak. There is a very similar scene in the movie.

Thank you all for your kind words about what I'm now calling the "doxie-roo" shirt since it's like a kangaroo pouch Smiley.

I think this is genius! I think I know a doxie who would love it if he could sit still long enough. What a great idea.

And your doxie is so very adorable. I want to squeeze him and love him all over.

That is awesome! Dachsunds love to burrow so I am sure he is in heaven. I saw something similar at the dachshund races, but it was more like a baby carrier that went over the clothes. Your t-shirt pocket is truly original.

That is adorable and hilarious! I am cracking up at Opie because I have a miniature Rat Terrier who is the complete opposite and wants to walk and run everywhere.  I need to make one of these for my shirt diving rats Beetlebum and Hiro, I have tried snuggle sacks but they just don't go for it so maybe a big ol' pocket would be up to their standards. LOL It would be nice not to have a scratched up chest and neck for once. Roll Eyes

This is so cute.  I may have to swipe the idea for our Lhasa Poo.  She thinks she's a furry human kid.  Always with the arms waving in the air to be picked up.

Awwww! I have doxies back in the states and I haven't seen my baby in a whole year hehe they really are lazy dogs who love to be pampered. Those great danes are absolutely gorgeous.  Be careful with your dog's back though, one of my dauschunds is about 11 years old now and when he was 8 or so he messed up his back really badly (we think from jumping down from beds and couches or something) and had like a A shaped back for a few weeks... we had to build him ramps to get in and out of his doggy door so it wouldn't put pressure on his spine and give him baby asprin to help with his apparent stiffness and pain... They don't seem like it when they're young but their spines get messed up when they get older. being said though your dog looks like he's doing well in his long pocket. what Beautiful animals you have!

I totally need to make one of these - except sideways kind of. Bjorn had a back injury (he's totally healed up now though) and I try to keep his back horizontal at all times to keep pressure off of his poor vertebrae.

Your gorgeous pupcakes make me grin:D
