I am trying to make renfest/larp type garb for the boyfriend... Accuracy is not important, can be fantasy, vaguely medieval or renaissance style...

His requests:
Looks Evil.
Nothing froofy (no fluffy shirts or lace)
no fabio-esque open chest

I've gone through pattern websites, but I think I need a "look" to work toward. Patterns can be altered to achieve it, I just need a starting point.

Inspire me?

Maybe this will inspire him:

My fave is the "Gothic Aristocrat Military Drape Shirt."

use lots of black, but avoid looking 'Emo.'  Try mixing in some blood red, purple, and silver.  Skull rings are great.  There is something down right evil about a black cape, like Darth Vader's. Wink

What do you think, sirs?- Joel, MST3K

lol, if fantasy is ok you could make him a satyr! They are especially mischievous, and have horns. ;-)
