 I found this tute:http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=42927.0 and my mind went back to a pair of pants I bought forever ago that don't fit. This is really only my second major project, other than tshirt reconstruction.. The sizing is a bit thrown off, and cord that was once pants is hard to sew into something else.
The lining is gold acetate.. something or other.

I broke penelope's needle plate while trying to sew the very... very thick handles (made from cord with interfacing inside) into the apex of the cord, pleather (both doubled up)and zipper.... and decided to either just use a long handle, or attach shorter handles to the belt buckles. I forget Penelope wasn't made for sewing heavy duty like my dad's commercial strength monstrosity.

It took a week to get a replacement, and Other that reinforcing the side handles, I moped and played games and cleaned.
