so i swiped a whole bunch of vinyl sheets from the signshop where i work and now i'm working on methods to make stickers without all the fancy equiptment they have. please leave comments!!!

it's very simple - TOUT:
print out or draw your image and cut off the excess paper. cut a piece of vinyl slightly bigger, and put the vinyl underneath:

tape them down to a cutting matt:

cut along the edges of your image. make sure you get the corners really well because it'll be a b*tch to fix later on.

take off the top layer (tape and paper) so only the vinyl is left. you may need to cut the tape a little to do this because it's stick to the vinyl around the outter edges. it's okay:

plaster the whole thing with masking tape. make sure to overlap the pieces. i go both vertical and horizontal so it's definitely not going anywhere:

peel the whole thing off the matt, making sure you don't lose any back pieces. taa-daa!! you made a sticker, ready for aplication!

APPLICATION:
again, very simple.
just peel away the backing pieces of the parts you want to be the sticker.
make sure the surface is clean and dry.
stick it starting at one side and working your way to the other, pressing it down to avoid air bubbles underneath.
YAY!!!

my finished products:

I'm pretty sure I saw that penguin stenciled on a shirt...a polo, maybe? Anyways, those are really cool, a tutorial would be greatly appreciated!

I really like your girly. I was thinking, and you could probably use ducktap for designs, but It wouldn't last as long and as nicely.

Damn, I love the idea of making stickers out of anything. The penguin rocks, then again I'm penguin-obsessed.

Those are very cool.  I knew someone who worked in an aviation paint-shop for the National Guard.  She made 9 one-foot circles, 4 each of two shades of green and one of a dark red and arranged them on her wall.  They looked REALLY cool.  Very mod.  I've wanted to play with something like that ever since.  Unfortunately, I don't work in a paint ship or sign shop.

But, Avery makes sign-grade adhesive vinyl.  And you can find distributors in your area at their website.  www.averygraphics.com

Meanwhile, if you're interested in making SMALLER projects, you can get colored vinyl tapes from a catalog caleld Uline.  I work at a warehouse, and this catalog sells packing materials and warehouse supplies.  These tapes are similar to duct tape, only they're thick adhesive vinyl, meant for marking floors.  You'd see them on floors in hospitals where it says "Follow the green line to the cafeteria" or some such, or on warehouse floors marking out where things go, or where safety stations are, etc.  The are mostly 2" rolls, though, so your designs would either have to be smaller than that or pieced together after creation.  But it'd be another option, anyway.  They've got roygbp, plus white and black (And the cool yellow and black slanty-striped safety tape) in the 2" width, for $3.95 for a 36yd roll.  Then, they have certain colors in 1", 3" and 4".

You could buy a roll, cut off portions and tape them to sticker backing you've saved up.  Something you can peel them off of again.  Then just follow the instructions above.

whoops, i thought i'd put in my post that yes, you can use contact paper (available by the roll at Wal Mart for like four bucks.) i wouldn't put it on my car, though. maybe that's just me.

I'm very intrigued but kinda confused...

Ok, once u have one side covered with masking tape, to use the actual "stickers", which side do u peel off? both?

Also, are you using the base vinyl peice or the tape and paper u peeled off? If so, then why is the hole still left on the vinyl g thing?

Hope these are clear questions.

yeah, you peel off both sides around the vinyl itself. you peel off the backing, stick it where you want it, press it down, then peel off the masking tape from the front. it's confusing, i know.

i leave all the pieces there, evern the negative space, because it'll keep the essential pieces where they belong (like that little floating square)

play with it a little and you'll figure it out too. it took me a little time at first.

hey guys. i know i'm a little late but i just found craftster.org a few days ago. (i love it, by the way!)

anyway, i tried this sticker making technique and couldn't get it to work. i used contact paper and the sticker i made came out clear because the contact paper was clear. did i do it wrong? i don't get it.
