Make Art - Not War

My name is JoleneMarie and I am addicted to art journals and journaling  Grin

I am also addicted to using 140# index paper in my art journals. Do you use it? This paper (I find it at Kelly Paper where I live in southern California) will take just about ANY medium you like to work with! First I give both sides of the paper a coat of acrylic paint or gesso and then I am good to go! I can paint, paste, or collage and the paper will not wrinkle! After several coats of acrylic paint the paper takes on almost a 'leather-like' quality and then I can even sew on it! I think if you try it you just might fall in love with it  Kiss

I have posted some pics of two journals I just recently made - they are filled to the brim with 140# index! I made the covers using canvas boards. I always use a Coptic stitch to bind my journals so they lay completely flat when opened - making my journaling a lot easier!

I would love to hear what YOUR favorite paper is for art journaling -lets share our ideas and learn from each other!

I'm still pretty new to this and my current journal is an old hardy boys book that I've been altering in but I'm going to have to try that paper because your journals look amazing.  Thanks for sharing, I'd love to see more pictures of the inside!

The positive feedback HERE on Craftsters really makes my day and inspires me to continue working in my art journals!
I will post a few pics of my pages...hope they inspire and motivate YOU to MAKE ART!

Here's the first one - it's a two page spread I did - using the 140# index paper -- there are numerous layers on these pages, creating texture and depth. I've used inks, acrylics, collage, and gel pens.

GO MAKE ART!!!

I seriously haven't been able to get these journals out of my head since I first saw them.

I love how you make your own books -- they're absolutely perfect, and I have yet to see a "blank" offered in any store near me.  I also adore how you have adorned and decorated the pages.  Beautiful!

I would love to pick up journaling and learn how to make such beautiful journals as you!

Your journals are so damn gorgeous! I am completely in love with them, like hipslikecinderella said, I haven't been able to get them out of my mind since I saw them! The colors are amazing, your binding looks very neat and sturdy, and I love that the paper you used is in different colors!

Your spread is also awesome, I can't wait to see more pages from you!

As for me, I've always wanted to start an art journal but never got around to doing it - however, I've done the odd 'to be included in my future journal' page here and there, and I usually favor 220-250g-weight paper. I used to use it for my building design classes, that's how I fell in love with it. It's quite thick so you can use watercolors on it, and it's usually a light cream color instead of white, which I love.

I think the coolest thing about keeping an art journal is that there is no wrong way. No rules. I love it, being the old hippie that I am  Wink Just make art with a big dose of peace and love!

After I send this post I will put up another pic of one of my art journal pages in hopes that someone is inspired to spend some time MAKING ART...Not War!  Grin

these are gorgeous, book marking this thread!

I dont know the paper you are talking about, does the 140 refer to the weight of the paper? or is there a particular brand, I am also unclear what you mean by index paper, does that refer to a particular use?

The 140 indicates the WEIGHT of the paper. Index is the kind of paper - very similiar to the weight of index cards, but a bit thicker. The 'brand' I use is Wausa (not promoting them, just as reference). I get mine at a local paper company in Southern California called Kelly Paper (I believe you can order via their website, just Google them!). It is AWESOME. This paper will virtually withstand any type of medium - you can gesso, collage, paint, glue - you name it -- just paint or gesso both sides first and you won't get any wrinkles. The more you layer (be it paint or gesso) the richer the texture of the paper becomes. It is my ONLY choice for art journals!

Thank you to everyone who has left a kind comment here - I was without a computer at home for awhile -- so I am not up to speed on my replies. I appreciate everyone so much for taking the time to leave a comment -- we all have such an opportunity here to learn from one another!

Believe me - it took me about 3 months to get the Coptic stitch right! I refused to give up! Now I have learned the nuances of the stitch as far as tension, etc - and it really paid off!
Thanks for the kudos - it makes me smile  Grin

Those are beautiful. I want need one. I'm gonna google that paper. And the Coptic stitch. What a wonderful idea for an art journal. I bet it makes it sooo much easier to draw when it's flat when opened.

I would looove to see some more pictures of the inside!

I believe that is the correct paper. Wausau #140 White Index. You get 250 sheets for $14.78!! Without putting in my address the freight charge is $7.10 and $1.44 for tax. Which is $23.32. I'm excited to order some.  Grin
